Huw (hedydd[nospam]@tiscali.co.uk) gurgled happily, sounding much like
they were saying :

Quote:
Your friend's family member is a muppet. "Servicing" is commonly used
to refer to a regas, which often needs to be done every couple of
years, more often in a car where the aircon's irregularly used.

Only if there is a leak. Cure leak and system remains good for however
long? Possibly and commonly many years, if not the life of the car.
If used regularly.

If it had a "proper" leak, it wouldn't have stayed working for a year.

What happens is that the pressure slowly drops, with the efficiency
similarly dropping, until it gets to the point where it's below the cut-off
switch's pressure level and the ac won't start.

Air con is not just expensive to buy it is statistically also one of the
least reliable systems on any vehicle and potentially very expensive to
repair. If you must have it on a car then, with luck, it will last well with
minimal bother. If it does give bother then one can either repair at a cost
or live without it. It's a choice that only the owner can make.
Depending on the age, general condition and cost of the vehicle, I repair
some and don't bother with others.

Personally, I leave the aircon running all the time. That seems to be
the secret behind the longevity of the system.

Me also. Never gets turned off unless a woman has been driving.

Cheers for all your input, think I might just leave it, seems I will
always be chasing after problems with it in the future!

Not necessarily, but possibly.

Now my air-con has run out inside of a year. Air conditioning seems to
be a grey area, where different people tell you different things! How
do I know that this company I used actually filled the car up properly
and it was not a half bottle of gas?! How do I know if this company
comes round to so-called service it, whether that is actually needed
or not!, short of buying my own gas and doing it myself? can anybody
tell me anything more about it? because its sure confused the hell
outta me!
If it was fitted in '96, that's about par for the course for the
compressor seals to start leaking - especially if it hasn't been run at
least once a week during the winter to keep them lubricated.

Minor leaks like these don't seem to show up in tests.

Aircon in a car relies on the seals in the compressor. If not used, they
can dry out and shrink, and let the refrigerant escape. That's probably
happened to yours - you may just need to use the aircon more often, you
may need to have the seals replaced.
Since this is such a common problem, you'd think 'they'd' make them easy
to change? And pigs might fly. ;-)

Anyone done a DIY repair?
