So your effectively saying I need to take time off work to buy a car, at least until it starts staying light longer. |

Incidentally, I always keep every receipt for *everything* I spend on a car, right down to a sidelight bulb. FSH makes any car easier to sell on when the time comes. |

Looking at Clios (98 on), Astra 16v (98 on), Corsa 1.2 (00 on), 306 , Rov 25. I'm not bothered about a fully stamped book, just evidence that the car's been maintained. Is this unreasonable to expect. And why is it so difficult to find a car privately, I had a list of 33 carsthis weekend. Half have been sold by Sat am and the other's either dont reply or no history. Buyingdecentcars*is* difficult :-) The age/price bracket you are looking at is the hardest. Anything 5 years old or less you would expect to get a full history. Anything over 10 years, any history is a bonus and the loss you might suffer from a poor buy is not catastrophic. It's the ones in between that I've always found the most difficult to buy. As others have said, you need to view on the first day the vehicle is listed. Anything left after that is either likely to be crap, or overpriced. Chris -- Remove prejudice to reply. |

I've seen an Alfa 146 1.6TS advertised for the past few weeks. It's a 00 V reg with only 50k miles and FSH (strangely, only just put the FSH in tonights re-ad). He started off at £2,295, then £1,995 last week, and £1795 this week. I dismissed it last week, thinking I was being silly, and I wanted something more economical, but I'm currently only doing 4 - 7k miles/year, so maybe it's not so daft ? I've always had a soft spot for them, and it's in a lovely metallic blue. At £1500, I'd be tempted. Would that be about the right price, and would I ever sell it in the future ? Would I be making a mistake; I guess they're fairly out-dated from a handling/roadholding point of view. Oh, also, he's put a different mobile number in to last week ! |

Glass's say only £1,150 PX in Exc cond ! Glass's are crap for valuing stuff like that. If it's a decent one, it'll be worth lots more than the Glass's value. There are plenty of rough ones out there that are only worth the Glass's value, though. However, it's a 1.6, which was the fleet special - cheap fabric on the seats, and an engine that was vastly under-powered for the size and weight of car. If you're buying a 156, the only ones to buy are the 2.0TSpark, 2.5V6, GTA, and the oil-burners (although, avoid the 8v diesels, as they're a bit slow). Essentially, avoid the 1.6 and 1.8 petrols. -- SteveH 'You're not a real petrolhead unless you've owned an Alfa Romeo' www.italiancar.co.uk - Honda VFR800 - Hongdou GY200 - Alfa 75 TSpark Alfa 156 TSpark - B6 Passat 2.0TDI SE - COSOC KOTL BOTAFOT #87 - BOTAFOF #18 - MRO # - UKRMSBC #7 - Apostle #2 - YTC # |

Essentially, avoid the 1.6 and 1.8 petrols. Steve, I did say 146 not 156. Assuming you realise that, are you still saying 120BHP is underpowered for the smaller bodied 146 ? |
