In news:W3aod.20082$up1.6042 (AT) text (DOT) news.blueyonder.co.uk,
TiM <TiM (AT) NOEMAIL (DOT) net> decided to enlighten our sheltered souls with a rant
as follows
Quote:
Hi all, I have had a company car for a month which I am really
unhappy with. It's the 'pool' car which under my contract I agreed to
drive until its lease expires and I can order my own.

Does anyone here have any tips and tricks for getting out of that and
having the company allow me to order my proper company car now?

It is a Toyota Yaris. They have a 3 year lease which expires in 6
months.
Well, it's in your contract, so drive it and stop your whinging. You're
getting a new motor in six months, until then you're in the Yaris.

Christs sake, when I was working in Chester I'd take a shabby old Transit
van home if there was fuck all else, I'd have been happy with a Yaris.

Admittedly, most of the time I was in a TDCi Mondeo or similar, but still, a
new car is a new car and all the average stuff is about as interesting to
drive as watching wallpaper fade...

Height could be an issue here and whilst I know people of similar height
who drove Toyota Seras out of choice, perhaps the garage can modify the
seat runners or something.

Nice idea Richard. So... I got approval from my manager to ask the garage
to adjust the seats, however they refused as tampering with them is illegal
due to the safety systems (airbag/pretensioners).

I have told my manager I do not feel safe in the vehicle. I cannot operate
the clutch properly as my knee hits the steering wheel, unless I hold my leg
at a sideways angle which causes cramp and backache. Not idea given my past
history of back trouble, and my height. I can move the steering wheel up
slightly but it makes little difference, and the handbook warns that the
wheel must be pointed at the chest NOT the face or the airbag can cause
death or serious injury. Not really my cup of tea that!

He is looking into it with the HR department but has said that if there is
no solution they may have to consider whether I am right for their company,
in other words I'd be given my notice and cast off as a troublemaker. My
response was that I would also reconsider my position in their company if
they were prejudiced towards tall people to the extent that I was forced to
drive 20,000 miles a year (that's my mileage) in a car where my discomfort
means my attention is not on my driving and a crash would cause my legs to
shatter as my knee is on the dashboard as it is.

They have given me the smallest car in the fleet. I am the tallest fleet
car user in the company. Hello?!?!!!

Would this be an issue of unfair dismissal? They didn't say, "No applicants
over 6 foot tall need apply!", in the job advert.

I did agree in the contract to get a company car 'which may be a pool car
until the end of its lease'. Does this mean I knew in advance that I was
agreeing to drive a car not suitable for very long legged people and have I
shot myself in the foot by signing that?

Oh, just found out its lease expires in 20 months, not 6.

Thanks :-S

Congratulations, your complaining and jealousy [1] has just pigeon-holed
you as a whinging troublemaker and effectively ended your career.

Stop moaning about stuff and direct your energies into doing the job
rather than finding excuses to get rid of the car.

[1] I mean, this is what it's all about, isn't it? - you feel inferior
to your colleagues as your car isn't as flash as theirs.

Big fat hairy bollocks. Try another garage.

Instead of "whinging", invite your boss and the fleet manager out to the
car park and demonstrate.

If they still threaten to chop you off, they're a bunch of cunts that
you're FAR better off not working for.

If they're like that over something so minor, wtf will they be like if ever
you have a serious problem?

Luck of the draw. Unfortunately for you.

Constructive dismissal
I'm sure they'd have been better putting:

'whinging bastards envious of their colleagues cars need not apply'

Sadly the car park is a 4 hour drive from my home office -- I'm a field
worker hence 20,000 miles a year in this thing.

I'm inclined to agree.

All good points.

If I left, it would be constructive dismissal. Which can then be proved as
being unfair dismissal (they left me no options). I'd go through the
grievance process first, but I can't see how a company can expect me to
drive unsafely in a car I don't fit it, especially with back problems that I
noted on my employment contract!
