I'd be more tempted to pay off the finance and buy an absolute minter of a 205 GTi 1.9 for a couple of grand. Yes, but you have a penchant for dangerous handling unreliable cars with atrocious build quality... The 205's 1.9 litre donk is hardly stressed, though. |

And it's not dangerous, it's merely frisky! |

Put it this way, of the 206s, Clio and 205, only one mutters, "pussy!" if you don't tackle a series of bends at 100%. ![]() -- The DervMan www.dervman.com |

And it's not dangerous, it's merely frisky! You just have to know how to handle it. The 'dangerous' reputation came from people brought up on a diet of over-safe understeery crap, IMHO. |
Great fun, a challenge, and sadly too many kiddies stuffed them.|
Build quality? Mumble mumble mumble . . . The very last GTis were pretty good, IMHO. Nice trim, and the revised dash made a huge difference. |

Don't often see a rotten one, either. |

The K-plater "Gentry" model I looked at was in reasonable nick - although this isn't a GTi, it was a special 1.9 donk mated to an automatic. Nice interior, but a bit expensive. It was advertised as an automatic GTi. |

I don't recall seeing / hearing one with a knackered lump recently. The last one I had a ride in (the owner wouldn't let Dervy drive it) sounded knackered, but this was because it had a stage two (iforgetthecompany) head conversion. It was a bit cammy, but it flew (and this individual car was due to get the 1.6 'box, so make the in-gear acceleraton even better). And it's not dangerous, it's merely frisky! You just have to know how to handle it. The 'dangerous' reputation came from people brought up on a diet of over-safe understeery crap, IMHO. They can be a bit intimidating, though. Unlike most other cars, they positively encourage you to try harder and faster. They whisper encouragement, they bellow for you to tackle it quicker, indeed they're very talkative cars . . . except when you do screw up and overcook it, they usually look the other way and say, "it wasn't me!" No, this is probably because good ones are kept good, and bad ones are crashed and stuffed by uncaring owners. ![]() -- The DervMan www.dervman.com |
