In article <5alijmF2pdbloU1 (AT) mid (DOT) individual.net>, R D S says...

I've just had a quote of £80 plus belt (outside normal working hrs sort of
thing) so thats not a problem.

Oh it is..

Quote:
It drives OK, stops OK, goes around bends OK, a mechanic I trust (as much as
one can) has been maintaining it for the past 3 years, I think it's a go-er.

So you trust a mechanic that'll just change the belt and not the
pulleys/tensioners?

Riiight.

Have you got all the facts at hand Conor?
Or is it just verbal diarrhoea(sp?) again?

I'll give you the hard fact... I've just had my car's cambelt changed this
morning - it included the pulley, tensioners and other bits.

£80 is too cheap, which would mean it's just the cambelt.

Check again.

However a local mechanic is waving a Mazda MX-6 under my nose, I mentioned
it a while ago.
He reckons the cambelt can be done for £150 but this sounds dubiously cheap.
Is this about right?
V6?
I used to have a Probe V6, and although time consuming, it wasnt
particularly difficult to do it at home. I dont think it could be done
at a car repairers for that price, as even with plenty of room, and kit
on hand, it is going to be 3 hours or more.
If it is the V6, then the cambelt isnt an urgent job, as the
valves/pistons are non-interference, so a broken belt will not usually
cause too many, if any, problems.
They are nice cars, but anything in the engine is a bit of a swine to
work on, as everything is so tight in there.
Alan.

Fuckin 'ell, can they do it without lifting the bonnet?

I had one changed on a Pinto-engined Sierra two years ago and it was £51
parts and labour. And I doubt they had just given the old one a wipe-over
since it had snapped.

That's good news.
Can anyone back this up or offer an opinion as to why I should get it done
in either case.

Cheers,

Rick

The figure of £80 was derived from a ten second phone relayed to me by a
third party the pertinent part of which being that the mechanic would charge
me £80 for the labour.

Ah... Now *that* is a different kettle of fish.

Parts free round your neck of the woods, are they?

Blah blah blah.

No but it satisfies one that unlike some motors I will not need to take out
a second mortgage.

Are you sulking because I didn't buy a Xantia?

<shrug>
Merely pointing out that £80 labour is not the same thing as £80 job
done...

Eh? Why would I?
