Is this about right?

V6?
I used to have a Probe V6, and although time consuming, it wasnt
particularly difficult to do it at home. I dont think it could be done
at a car repairers for that price, as even with plenty of room, and kit
on hand, it is going to be 3 hours or more.
If it is the V6, then the cambelt isnt an urgent job, as the
valves/pistons are non-interference, so a broken belt will not usually
cause too many, if any, problems.

That's good news.
Can anyone back this up or offer an opinion as to why I should get it done
in either case.

Cheers,

Rick
both engine types are 'most likely' to be damaged by a broken belt,
according to autodata

A smalltime trader who used to be based next to one of the car hire firms I
used to run bought an M reg Probe V6 (this was in '99) and lost a huge
amount of money on it after the cambelt snapped. Needed all 24 valves
replacing. That one was definately an interference engine.

So he broke both cambelts at the same time?
And damaged all valves on a non-interference engine?
It sounds like more than the 2 cambelts failing if all valves were
damaged.
Or he didnt know what he was talking about.
Alan.

Fuckin 'ell, can they do it without lifting the bonnet?

I had one changed on a Pinto-engined Sierra two years ago and it was £51
parts and labour. And I doubt they had just given the old one a wipe-over
since it had snapped.

I had a Pinto-engined Transit recovered, and the cambelt replaced all in
under two hours once. I'm not sure of the relevance to the OP however...

Have you got all the facts at hand Conor?
Yes. It's called having a clue how to do the job properly.

Or is it just verbal diarrhoea(sp?) again?

Go to any motor factors and ask how much a cambelt kit is including the
pulleys.

And guess why most cambelt failures occur even though the belt has been
changed as it should?

Blah blah blah.

You're the one who said it was £80 all in.

Because Autodata says he's wrong and depends on whether you'd like a
planned period without the car or unplanned one whilst the belt is
changed.

YOu can replace a Pinto cambelt in half an hour including replacing the
tensioner. Total cost of parts including a new tensioner is under £50.

Yep. I'm still not sure of the relevance to the OP though ;-)

R D S (rsandr (AT) gmail (DOT) com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were
saying :

Now that depends if...

a. It IS non-interference.
b. Even if it IS non-interference, you're lucky and the "not usually"
covers you.
c. It lets go at a convenient time.

So tell me, punk, d'you feel lucky...?

Or is it worth a bit of relatively cheap insurance...?
