If it is the V6, then the cambelt isnt an urgent job, as the valves/pistons are non-interference, so a broken belt will not usually cause too many, if any, problems. That's good news. Can anyone back this up or offer an opinion as to why I should get it done in either case. A smalltime trader who used to be based next to one of the car hire firms I used to run bought an M reg Probe V6 (this was in '99) and lost a huge amount of money on it after the cambelt snapped. Needed all 24 valves replacing. That one was definately an interference engine. So he broke both cambelts at the same time? And damaged all valves on a non-interference engine? It sounds like more than the 2 cambelts failing if all valves were damaged. Or he didnt know what he was talking about. |

It's not unheard of, and he knows exactly what he's talking about, besides, I was there during the rebuild - he did it in my workshop. |

However a local mechanic is waving a Mazda MX-6 under my nose, I mentioned it a while ago. It looks very nice, has 12 months MOT, he is bringing it over so I can have a run in it. He reckons the cambelt can be done for £150 but this sounds dubiously cheap. Is this about right? Scarily dubiously cheap. MX6, IIRC, is an utter bastard to do the belt on, same reason why there are loads of ubercheap dead V6 Probes knocking about, same engine, same problems. Wasn't there a limp-wristed 4-pot as well as the V6? - that might explain things. |
