Default Cambelt change on MX-6 - 05-12-2007 , 04:44 AM

I have had my head in the Autotrader all morning and nothing is floating my
boat for a grand.
However a local mechanic is waving a Mazda MX-6 under my nose, I mentioned
it a while ago.
It looks very nice, has 12 months MOT, he is bringing it over so I can have
a run in it.

He reckons the cambelt can be done for £150 but this sounds dubiously cheap.
Is this about right?

Scarily dubiously cheap.

MX6, IIRC, is an utter bastard to do the belt on, same reason why there are
loads of ubercheap dead V6 Probes knocking about, same engine, same
problems.

yep.
I forgot to mention that the company had just opened the workshop in our
town,
so it may be that they done it on a lower labour charge, just to help
getting their name around.

I think its called "formula one"

2 litre is a 1.7 hour job and looks easy, the 2.5 v6 is 3 hours and looks
much harder.

I've just done the belts on a Ferrari, it took me three and a half days !!!!
Mainly due to the pain in the hips access and cleaning old gaskets off, and
being ultra cautious as it was a first time job. Other than that it was OK

I've just had a quote of £80 plus belt (outside normal working hrs sort of
thing) so thats not a problem.

It drives OK, stops OK, goes around bends OK, a mechanic I trust (as much as
one can) has been maintaining it for the past 3 years, I think it's a go-er.

They just wiped the cambelt cover over with a rag to make it look as
though they'd changed it, then.

Bunch of cunts, the lot of 'em - when I was young as foolish, I gave
them my Cinq. to do a quick oil change, it came back with a dent in the
front wing where some pie-eating gorilla had leant on it.

Wasn't there a limp-wristed 4-pot as well as the V6? - that might
explain things.

I did all the belts on a Maserati Biturbo a few years ago. *Never* again.
