Default Cheaper insurance by adding another driver - 05-24-2005 , 09:15 AM

Hello all,

My insurance quote is reduced if I add a second driver to my policy, if
the second driver is female and hasn't made any claims.

I guess this is because the female driver is statistically a lower risk
than I am (26yr old male), and when she is driving the car, I can't be.

In the past I've added my mum to the policy, but she recently made a
claim on her policy so adding her on mine doesn't give me so much
benefit.

My question is, how legitimate is it to add somebody completely random
on to the policy? Can I add one of my friends, who doesn't live with me
and probably will never drive the car? Technically it might be useful
some day for her to be able to drive it, but clearly the reason for
adding her to the policy is to reduce the cost. Do you think the
insurance company would object to this in the event of a claim? Does
anybody (everybody?) do this?

I'm obviously not suggesting making her the main driver, just adding
her as a second driver. The quote goes down from 770 to 675 (with
elephant), so it's worth doing.

Sorry if this has been asked before, I can't find any reference to it.

Thanks!

Hofman

You might find that there's a question on the form asking what this person's
relationship to you is, and if the answer is "none", you get challenged on
why you're including them.

I once did something similar, though. I had a company car which I insured
and my company reimbursed 80% of the premium. I added a 23-year-old female
to the policy to get the premium up, then when I was relocated to London a
few months later, I amended my insurance details to reflect a car lkiving on
the street in London. That put the premium up but taking her off it reduced
it again. At no stage was I asked who she was - I think they just assumed
'bird', accurately as it happens.

If the person you want to add doesn't own a car but will one day, it
could actually be advantageous to them - I was a named driver on my
wife's policy for our family car for about 9 years before we bought a
second car, which I insured in my own name: I was given full NCD by
virtue of having been a claim-free named driver.
