Leave the doors unlocked on a night when a bunch of Mancunians are on
the piss in Edinburgh.

Presuming you don't have any AA or RAC cover? I think I'd be starting to
question whether it was worth while.

Either get it fixed locally, or look at spending a BIG chunk of money. If
it's not too big a car, your cheapest way would probably be to hire a big
enough van & car trailer.

It's downhill most of the way...

But seriously. As Adrian says, hiring a low loader and something to tow it
with is going to be the most sensible. Once upon a time you could have put
it on the train...

'Fix it and drive it there' may be cheapest depending on how broken it is.

Which would involve a big old round trip to drop off the hired van back to
the hire place. Ok, you could use a hire firm that lets you drop it off at
another branch nearer to home, but I can't see that being all that possible
with a trailer.

Hmm. If I were picking a van up from say Aberdeen, I'd hire a van locally,
drive to and from Aberdeen, then drop off the van.

Or a one way hire?

If I were picking a van up from Aberdeen, I'd arrange it a few weeks in
advance and get a cheapie easyjet flight up there!

As for the OP's situation in Edinburgh - it all depends whether or not
they're still in Edinburgh with the car, or back in Manchester. And who
they plan to borrow/hire the trailer from, and if one-way hire for the
trailer is possible...

One way hire is always possible, just not in the spirit of keeping it as
cheap as possible!
