"Doki" <mrdoki (AT) gmail (DOT) com> gurgled happily, sounding much like they were
saying:

Overall, my advice would be that any automatic is likely to be
unpleasant in any car that doesn't have a) at least 100 horsepower per
tonne and b) a good spread of torque. That rules out almost all
particularly economical cars that I can think of. OTOH CVT automatics
as fitted to Micras and DAFs in days of yore may be an entirely
different kettle of fish...

The 2.0L Audi/VW diesels with the DSG gearbox work pretty well but way
out of the OPs price range.

It also cheats rather by not being a conventional auto with a torque
convertor.

Drive any current merc CDi with the autobox, in fact even going back to the
older W210E300TD. Auto suits diesel very well.

Which is really what's needed for a diesel. You simply don't need a TC on
an engine which produces lots of low speed torque - all it does is waste
fuel. A fluid flywheel would make more sense - same as pretty well all
buses etc use. And plenty of ratios to make up for the narrow power band.
I was on a small local bus the other day and it had at least a 6 speed
auto - all that for a top working speed of about 40 mph.

I have a neighbour with a 535 diesel auto and that works very well. As it
should at the price. But I've a feeling most small diesel autos are a bit
of a bodge due to low demand.

London taxis says it doesn't most of the time. But as I said I reckon it's
down to poor development with most - they simply sling in the nearest box
they have.
