Default Effect on resale value without franchised dealer servicing - 02-09-2005 , 02:50 PM

I own a Seat Leon Cupra that is coming up to three years old, up to now I
have had it serviced at a Seat dealer to keep the warrenty valid. However,
the warranty runs out this March so I am wondering whether it is worth
keeping getting the car serviced at a garage or to do it myself. Previously
I always carried out all the servicing/repairs to my cars.

If I keep the car for another 2 years does anyone know what the effect on
the resale/trade-in value would be it I serviced it myself.

Thanks

Pete

I would have thought the halfway house was to take it to a god backstreet
garage where prices are less than a franchise but you get a piece of paper
showing the car has been fully serviced?????

Service it yourself. If you've got the know-how and the neccessary tools to
do the major jobs as well (like cambelt), do them as well. Keep all parts
receipts, and keep a notebook of everything that you've ever done to the
car, with dates and mileages. That to me is every bit as good as a full
service history.

Depends how you sell it. If you trade in at a dealer, you are unlikely to
get any more than bottom book even with full dealer service history. Trade
always value sound bodywork more than mechanicals. If you sell privately,
you may charge a bit more (a few hundred quid) and makes it easier to find a
buyer.

Well, assuming you need two services per annum, at a dealer average of 200
quid per service, and a self-service price of say 60 quid using original
parts and good oils then I reckon the 560 quid saving will outbalance any
loss in value. Or keep it longer, spend the difference on getting it chipped
and it'll feel like a new car again and you'll not want rid in two years
time.

Leons are ace.

well if you add up all the money you would have spent getting it
serviced at a dealers you'd probably be better off in the long run.

put it this was, we had the front break pads changed at the dealers a
couple of months ago, cost £116, this week we took it to the local
garage for a 36k mile service, included changing the rear break pads,
and it came to £138... £45 of that was for the rear breaks inc fitting
if I'd done it myself I would have saved about £50 labour charge

Thanks all, I think you have convinced me I will service it myself, I much
prefer this as I am then sure that things have been done. Only problem is
Haynes don't do a manual for the Leon so will have to get a VW Golf one as
mechanically they are the same.
