And
there would be a lot of people doing 85-90mph, just as there are now.

Where? Damned if I see them. I see "a few", certainly nowhere near
enough to be classed as " a lot".
That's 'cos the roads you drive on are clogged with trucks.

Most motorway trips I've done recently (mostly M5, late evening or very
early morning) have been at those sorts of speeds.

Conor (conor.turton (AT) gmail (DOT) com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they
were saying :

I was just W of Brum yesterday. M40, M42, M5. Got up early, so had plenty
of time, wanted to get up there without filling up, so I chilled out a bit,
and cruised it at an indicated 85ish both ways - genuine 80ish.

There was a steady stream of stuff past me in L3 the full distance both
ways. Not *hacking* it past, sure, but not exactly creeping up on me.

D'you know what? I actually felt *LESS* safe than if I'd been with 'em in
L3 at 90+. Why?
- Packed in tighter with the fucknuggets who couldn't *observe* if their
lives depended on it (I've got news for 'em. It does)
- Mixing it with the fuckwits who think that because they're doing an
indicated 69mph, they'll be shot at dawn for using L1
- Trying to slot into L3 to get past the duelling 90k limiter brigade

I'll stick with the fast boys, thanks.

Why do these cunts have to keep on trying to overtake each other three
abreast? You've all got the same speed limits you pricks!

It was GPS based (and let's assume it just works), and like was said,
it enforced you to do no more than the speed limit. 20 in a 20, 30 in
a 30. You get a different style number plate so that people behind you
will have a little more patience knowing that you're going as fast as
you can.

Let's say you are travelling along a SC with a 60 limit following a 20m long
HGV doing 40mph (call it 18m/s for the maths.) Now being a safe driver you
leave 10m behind and in front for your overtake for safe breaking distances,
that's a total of 40m. If you accelerate to 60mph 27m/s before pulling out
that's a speed differential of 9m/s so to travel the relative 40m will take
4.5s and you are in the oncoming lane for 121.5m, if you accelerate to 80mph
36m/s that's an 18m/s differential or 2.25s exposed to danger half the time
for only a third more speed you are also only in the oncoming lane for 80m
65% of the distance of passing at 60. Being able to exceed the speed limits
can be a safety asset so long as it's not abused and that's something the
almost extinct breed known as traffic police always knew but it's not a
politically correct thing to admit now.
Aren't you basing this on instant acceleration from 40mph to 60mph?

Anyhow, yeah - sometimes life's a bummer and you get stuck behind
someone for 5 minutes until there's a chance to overtake without
breaking the speed limit. Calm down I'd say.

Since acceleration varies a lot, from a micra to an EVO, he couldn't
factor that directly into his equations. If you hang back further and
accelerate in anticipation of the potential overtake, then his logic
still applies (ok, this requires pulling out when 16m from the lorry,
rather than the 10m quoted - assuming 1g braking)

And sometimes you get stuck behind a moron who drives at 40 or less on
well sighted but too-busy-to-overtake A-roads for 80 miles, twice a
week, meaning that 3.6 days (or 1%) of your life are pointlessly wasted.
Anything less than a 1% chance of dying whilst travelling at 60mph
instead mean that the ensemble life-span is actually *increased* by
going more quickly. Moreover, since said moron typically builds up a
queue of dozens of cars, this effect is significantly increased.

3.6 days = 1% of your life?

1% of a year, maybe....

You're the only prick here if you think that's the case.

Really?

So the trucks I regularly see holding up queues of cars on the M25 side
by side on three lanes all doing exactly 56MPH are not likely to be limited?

I think not.
