Yep I think the testarossa only won cos it's the only ferrari most
people know if you stop them in the street. Ditto the 308 being 'that
one from Magnum'. Ask who makes a 360 and they'd probably say BMW. No
288GTO, no 355, no 250 GT SWB. Cuh! The general public.

F40 would have been top for me.

Personally I think all the TV motoring progs are concentrating far too much
on fast 'exotic' machinery. I love cars and driving but have never had the
slightest interest in 'sports' cars which (IMO!) are impracticable,
uncomfortable, anti-social, and encourage unsafe motoring. Most people I
speak to want to see far more coverage of the sort of cars they can afford
to actually buy and own!

I agree with what you say to a certain extent, but I can't agree with some
of your reasoning - 'sports' cars are impractical, but if you don't need
practicality... for the two or three days a year I need a decent boot, I'll
borrow a friends car. Comfort's subjective - I prefer the extra support the
seats (usually) give. As for being anti-social, if you squeezed two people
into my rear seats, they'd have to be VERY social ;-)

Encouraging unsafe motoring? I think the media do that rather than the
cars...

I do, however, agree with you - I'd rather see more 'real' cars (including
more affordable sports cars) in these programs. Most people considering a
Ferrari aren't likely to be swayed by a group test on Fifth Gear.

Personally, I completely disagree :-)

If I want to find out the details of cars that I can afford, then I'll
research on the internet, talk to owners and go and drive them myself.
What I want to see on tv is exotic machines that I will never have a
chance to see or hear going round a track, or driving hard round the
swiss alps.
For an average shopping car, the important things are practicality,
mileage, cost of ownership, reliablity etc... All things that can be
covered much better in any other medium than TV. Want to know how the
new golf is? Go and drive it. Want to know how a Pagani Zonda is?
Watch the TV.

These shows are about entertainment, TV has to be the worst medium for
providing consumer information on mundane matters, you won't be able to
cover all the cars in enough detail, nobody will watch the show unless
they are actively looking to purchase the car featured.

Sure! In return I'll take you for a spin in my impractical,
unaffordable, bad driving inducing exotic

You should watch some of the car progs on Men and Motors. Quite
literally the arse end of motoring journalism and the place for used
Sierra tests and the like.

Caught a bit of one on saturday with a bloke wanting a 70's classic
saloon to replace his BX. They offered him a C reg SAAB 900 (not exactly
70's classic!), a dolomite and a pea green Maxi which they said was
worth £2000!!!! Personally I didn't think it was worth two quid let
along two thousand. He went for the dolomite cos he liked the chrome :-|

Plenty of that sort of stuff on there.

'Driven' tends to do mid range saloons and estates and stuff too.

Gave up on Driven when they had a hotel doorman picking out the best
in a sportscar group test... and the damn competitions...

I thought it was back to front! Dino at the top for me :-) Then 355, then
360 probably.
