It would if it was a company car. S3 - taxed on 29% of £24640. Golf - taxed on 15% of £17775. Even more of a win if the fuel is not provided. Indeed - the economics of running a company car are totally different to those of owning one privately. You take it for granted you have a new car and change it every 3/4 years - but you don't suffer the depreciation personally. So tax-efficiency against what you need from a car is the key driving factor. |

I was reading the latest "What Car" this morning, and in the section where people write in to talk of their good deals, a woman wrote: "The Commute in my Audi S3 was costing too much so I opted for a VW Golf GT TDi PD 150..." at which point my mouth opened with shock because I knew there was no way this could work. Lets assume that the S3 was getting 25mpg, and her commute was 30 miles each way - 60 miles a day, 5 days a week, 48 weeks a year. By my calculations that is 576 gallons/year, which means her annual fuel bill is around £2,000/year. This is only an estimate, but it gives an order-of-magintude idea of how much someone could be spending on commuting. She then went onto say how she got her new car with options for *only* £18,850 and blah blah blah. Now the thing is, assuming the diesel golf is twice as econimcal as the S3 (which is a bit of a strong assumption!), she would be saving around £1,000 /year. How many years will it take before any money has actually being saved? And of course if she doesn't keep the Golf forever she will be hit by depreciation. Even though the Golf is a "low" depreciator, it only retains around 50% of its value over 3 years. So during the first three years, it will depreciate at a rate of approximately £3,100/year. Where are the savings to be had there? Yes I know her S3 will be depreciating too, but if it isn't brand new then you can expect the rate of depreciation more like £1,000/year I just can't believe how people can go and spend thousands of pounds without first sitting down with a pen and paper and doing a few calculations first. Some people get hyper-obsessed with how much money they spend on fuel because they percieve it as money down the drain, but depreication on new cars is equally money down the drain. If I were the editor I would have told her to buy a J-reg Fiesta diesel and be happy with it ![]() |

This from the man in the Mercedes C class coupé. We got the coupe because its a pretty car, nothing to do with financial reasons. The fact that it is marginally more economical than the SL is a bonus. So why do you have a problem with people buying cars for other irrational reasons, such as "it goes like fuck" or "it's enormous and intimidating"? |

If I were the editor I would have told her to buy a J-reg Fiesta diesel and be happy with it ![]() Well, I'd not go as far as a J reg Fiesta Dieseasel, but otherwise you've hit the nail on the head from my point of view. Then again, my point of view recently involves an Alfa 164 which was damn cheap, and is worryingly half the cost of the Golf to insure, and better on fuel too. Bonus! |

Golf does between 26 and 35 mpg. 164 between 32 and about 40. (T-Sparks are great on fuel) |
