Default Ford Key System (2003) - 05-13-2007 , 06:17 AM

Morning,

I bought my 2003 Ford Fusion with only one key, the remote one. Docs
seem to suggest and I would expect there to be a second non-electronic
key that I probably would need for various tasks after battery
disconnection, or perhaps when the battery drains on the key I do have.

Can anyone let me know what problems I face not having this key, other
than the risk of only having one key to lose... In fact, follow-up
question, if I did lose it, how expensive to sort it out. I do have a
key code on a card.

Info appreciated.

Cheers,
Tom

As you have the key on the card number you will be able to have two keys
ordered to fit the locks fine, but to programme the car to accept them as
you dont have another, it will need to be hooked to Mr Fords computer to do
so. Around the £120 mark.

NEVER buy a car with just one key present.

Thanks for the info. I can't fault the last statement but what's done is
done. Just clue me in a little further by correcting my assumptions
(hopes) if necessary.

1. If I lose my one key, I have a £120 solution to getting new keys..
even if I can't physically get the car to a dealer?

2. If the battery runs out in the key I have, the car will continue to
"mobilise", and i'll just have to unlock it by hand? This i'm least sure
about..

3. If I replace the dead battery, the key will work again without
reprogramming.

Again, help much appreciated.

Cheers,
Tom.

The car needs to be at the dealer to do the work. You'll have transport
costs to deal with also. *Some* high-street key cutters can now clone your
existing key, but personnally I've found them sometimes un-reliable-
sometimes they work, sometimes you need a 2nd visit to make them work!
Certainly worth a go if they'll give your money back if they make a dud.

Note however that making a cloned 2nd key will not then enable you to code
further keys to the car as it will only ever "see" one key.- you need two
differnent ones to make a 3rd.

The battery works the RCL alone- the immobilizer works passively.

As long as the battery isnt allowed to go completely dead, then you have
about 15-20 seconds to swap old battery for new in the key. Any longer and
the key will need re-programming. Depending on which system your car has
Sagem or Siemens determines whether you can do it yourself or need the
dealers help.

Thanks again. All very useful. It's surprisingly hard to find this
information. I've now also discovered I also have locking wheel nuts and
no key (but I have that code too). Yesterday was a bit of a wakeup call
all in all.

Cheers,
Tom.

You are not alone!
