I dont mind them, its the ones waiting for you at the lights to wash
your windscreen that I hate. You tell them you dont want it washed,
they do it anyway...and spit on you if you dont pay them

Try a polite shake of the head when they approach. With a smile if you can
manage it. If they're spitting at you it suggests you're inviting the
screen to be cleaned then not paying. Simple really.

Maybe that works where you are, but where I drive, unless you start shouting
and sound your horn, they 'will' wash your windscreen.

Strange people then. Not many will do work knowing they're not going to
get paid. Unless you're particularly pretty, of course.

Well, most people feel obliged to pay them after they do that...they get
worried they might kick the car or smash a window if they dont pay up...so
they do.

To be fair, the problem is not as bad as it used to be a couple of years
ago. I think the police have been more strict with them lately

This is the problem. I reckon to wash a car properly without risk of
scratching the paint requires more water than they use.
I was wondering where they got the water from in a supermarket car park.

The cafe one which my wife and I have regularly used, have a mains supply
with a pressure washer.
They start by thoroughly wetting the car with it. Then a couple of guys
attack it with suds and sponges. Another sprays the wheels with a wheel
cleaner. Then it's given a good rinse using the pressure washer again. The
car is then driven to another area a few yards away to be dried off. No sign
of any scratching since my wife and I have been using them.

The latest one at the farm shop also uses a pressure washer connected to a
mains supply.
Mike.

I'm pretty certain they pay rent to use the carpark - so will have
facilities available like access to water. In my local Tesco they have a
portacabin to store their materials and trolleys, etc.

Just about all the supermarket car parks round here.
And here.

Although they're supposedly a legit operation, they never have a receipt
book - it's always 'just run out', so they don't get my trade.

Certainly one or two up here in Shropshire- there's a gang in one of the
Shrewsbury Multistories, £6 for wash, chamois, polish, hoover out, and
some tyre shine on a super-mini (corsa size) £20 for my Xtrail though-
less value IMHO, but they do do a good job.
The cafe one I use has the same price for all cars. Starting at £6 for a
simple wash, wheel clean and dry, up to £25 for a wash, wax polish, and full
interior valet.

Slightly nerve-wracking handing a gang of little-english-speaking
strangers your keys though!!
At the one I use you can sit in the car if you prefer. Just driving it
forward a couple of feet so they can do the wheels properly, and then
driving it to the drying area, after washing.
I usually nip in the cafe, get a cup of coffee, then sit in one of the
outside chairs watching them work. :-)
Mike.

I still prefer the idea of using a mains jet washer, rather than using
buckets, if that's what they use.

A year or so ago, where I live in West Sussex, hand car washing was unheard
of unless you did it yourself. Then some guys, possibly Polish, started hand
washing cars in the car park of a local roadside cafe, about 3 miles from
where I live.
Washing the car, including the wheels, tyres, and door shuts. Rinsing with a
pressure washer, and drying off for £6, which I thaught good value. Did
great business, especially last year when we had a hosepipe ban.
Last week we've had another lot starting a service just outside our village,
using the premises of a roadside farm shop that been disused for years.
Since '88 if IIRC. When a storm flattened the few acres of greenhouses that
supplied the shop.
That's completely irrelevant though. Thaught I'd add it for a bit of local
interest. :-)
What I was really wondering is, is this just a local thing, or are hand
washing places popping up all over the country?
Mike.

Around a dozen in Hull. Had one in Bridlington for 3 years now and one
in Driffield although it only lasted 12 months.
