Default Hole in roof. - 01-18-2004 , 05:00 PM

Just baught a car which has a mobile aerial screwed to the roof.
Suggestions for a cheap and cosmetically acceptable way of
sealing the hole that's left if I remove it.
I'm thinking of a tight fitting plastic plug. One with a very
shallow head, and a sharp edge.
Obviously the same metallic silver colour as the car,so it would
just show as a small bump.
Does anyone know any better ways, without spending too much ?
Mike.

Bwahahaha!

You just bought an ex-plod hack. Good luck.

Hey, be positive, it could be an ex-taxi.
Good point - but silver seems to be the colour of choice for the plod
these days.

That's what I thought. I'd leave it there and drive around with a white
shirt on and a hi vis jacket in the back. Epaulettes would be an optional
extra.

I saw the state of the cars in a police garage last year. Very, very
worrying. I wouldn't have one of them after plod have finished with
them. It looks like every car in the fleet will get seriously bent at
some time in its life. Seriously bent as in bad enough to damage the
engine.

I don't think anyone in their right minds would trust a crumple zone to
perform as well after a bash like that as it did the first time, no
matter how well it has been aligned on a jig.
We had a retired car parked outside the shop for a while in a spate of
drive-offs. Not _that_ old (P-reg), but it was an absolute shed.

Mind, that's what you get for buying a Rover 200, I suppose.

Nope.
I know what I baught. I have it's history. It certainly isn't an
ex taxi or plod car. 2 private owners only.
Simply one which once had an auto mobile phone installed.

The car itself is not a problem. IMO it was a good buy.
Serious suggestions about the hole would be more helpful. :-)

Maybe something like those thin round self adhesive plastic
labels, that stick to surfaces like the proverbial.
Mike.

What?!

I've knot known of mobiles being installed like that for many years -
most use a self-adhesive aeriel stuck to the rear glass.

I can't see many people drilling holes in the roof of their car, other
than plod or minicab drivers.

It might have been a privately owned car, but it doesn't mean it hasn't
spent it's life as a minicab...... personally, no matter how cheap, I
wouldn't go anywhere near a car that had holes drilled in it's shell.

Best option would be to splash out for a bodyshop to fill it and spray
the area. It's the only way you'll really hide the damage - and worth it
when you come to sell, as otherwise it'll have 'minicab' written all
over it to any prospective buyer.

Well the car is 9 years old.

Maybe the 1st owner wasn't concerned.

You might just be right. I know cars for business, often are
registered to individuals.
Possibly to enhance their resale value..
But based on it's condition, and it's mileage at it's first MOT,
I think it's highly unlikely to have been a minicab.
Maybe a Co directors car originally though. I can't be
absolutely certain the first owner only used it privately, but
the second owner, the guy I baught it from certainly did. He'd
had it since it was 2 years old.
Im any case, a fairly good spec 525i SE BMW, is not a common
choice for a minicab. :-)

Again you could be right. Maybe I'll get a quote, but chances
are that by the time I sell it it wouldn't make a lot of
difference.
It wasn't particularly expensive, but given it's virtually
unmarked exterior and interior, as well as it's excellent
mechanical condition, I think I got a bargain.

Still don't like the hole in the roof though. :-)
Mike.

Stupid suggestion I know : Fit _another_ aerial?

Just buy ones where the holes appear on their own Steve? ;-)
