Default Improting a used car from Germany? - 12-04-2004 , 01:16 PM

Hi all,
How would I go about getting a used car legally into the country? If I buy a
used car from Germany can I fly over, drive it over here via a ferry
legally?

I intent to break the car for parts when it gets here.

I am wondering if the "drive any car not owned by myself" works abroad? It
would be a simple case of taking a mate to buy the car in his name then
drive us back over, into my garden and get the spanners out? Would there be
any paperwork at the port?

Will

Ask your/your mates insurance company what their stance on it is. If they
refuse to insure you then buy/rent/borrow a trailer to put it on and tow it
back.

Why not buy a car in the UK? Unless it is some very rare classic.

At the German end, I wouldn't worry. If stopped by the politzi, your
British, your confused. Get somekind of insurance from someone, be it
UK & German. Just tell them your covered and drive safely, no racing
on the autobharns!

As for the UK. Well at the port, I doubt you'll get stopped by
customs. Unless they think you'll Kosovan or smuggling cigs & booze.
Of course, you don't want to pay duty on importing the car, if your
goning to scrap it. check with customs in the UK before going and ask
if there is an exemption for cars to be scrapped. If not, then your
not going to import the car, are you, you've just borrowed it for a
few days and will be taking it back . You will need insurance for
driving on UK roads. But, not MOT or tax as you'll be on foriegn
plates. No point in registering it, if your going to scrap it.
