Default Increase in the theft of sat-nav from cars, oddity - 02-03-2007 , 10:13 AM

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6325173.stm

But this bit I don't get:

"Detective Sergeant John Agar from the force's vehicle crime team explains:
"Thieves at the moment are using the latest technology, which can track a
sat nav system even when it isn't on display in a vehicle."

huh? What possible technology exists that can tell whether there is a
switched-off sat nav system in my glove box or boot? The article doesn't go
on to say. Unless those x-ray specs from joke shops really do work...

D.

He did not say it was turned off, just out of view. The thieves probably
pick up the LO or IF with a conventional Rx.

Eyes, which are used to detect a circular sucker mark in the centre of the
windscreen.

he is getting confused for satnavs with built in Bluetooth. A mobile phone
can be used to locate one with Bluetooth.

I don't have satnav but I have one of those marks from when the windscreen
was fitted int he factory and it won't come off.
Had the car two years and regularly clean the inside of the windscreen.
The mark is still there.

Cant understand that- I occasionally deliver plate glass to glass merchants
and this is often "suckered" off. There should not be any potential
contaminant on the rubber pads, which work on the applied vacuum principle.

Toothpaste is good for getting stubborn marks (and traffic film) off of
windscreens.

I will give that a try.
Windowlene hasn't done it and I am forever rubbing the inside to get rid of
moisture.
The other sucker mark came off but not the one stubborn one.

The mark may be permanent in which case it is likely that the windscreen has
de-laminated where the suction pad was applied, probably because the
windscreen supplier did not allow sufficient time for the screen to "cure"
before supplying it to the car assembler.

Try citrus wipes.

Have you tried methylated spirits?
