Default MOT Database Usefulness - 03-24-2007 , 10:13 AM

I left my car with the guy who usually arranges my car's MOT's on
Wednesday evening as I had it booked in for the following day and it
saved me getting up early ..He doesn't actually do them but he uses a
local MOT Station.

He phoned me at1538 on Thursday to say that the bad news was that one
wee thing needed attention ..an anti-rollbar had a problem so it was
agreed that he would do this and also replace a new door mirror
( previously agreed) that I had bought for £15 on Ebay .

I got a call on Friday at 1120 Hrs to say it was ready and the total
cost was £105.

When I collected it he didn't give me the check list ..just the pass
Cert.
When I got home I noticed that the cert was timed at 1355 on Thursday
..
I have just checked the database at www.motinfo.gov.uk and it shows
this
"Advisory Notice issued
Offside Front anti-roll bar linkage has slight play in a ball joint
(2.4.G.3)
Non obligatory mirror damaged "

The costs were MOT £45/Labour £45 and Parts £15.

It seems that before he called me the first time the car had already
passed with the 2 advisory items .He didn't actually use the word
"fail" and I'm not particularly bothered anyway as I wanted the mirror
fitted and I'd probably have told him to replace the joint ....I think
I'd have preferred him to have been upfront about things ..Not seeing
the check list prevented me seeing the advisory items on it .

www.motinfo.gov.uk is a useful facilty and will become more so as time
progresses .

Stuart

Your bloke probably has a "nod and a wink" arrangement for minor fail
issues, where they give him a pass cert on the understanding that he'll do
the job before letting you have the car back. This saves them both the
hassle of taking it back again, and saves you a few quid too.

It shouldn't happen, but it does. Many years ago I had a similar arrangement
myself. I didn't tell you that.

shazzbat (shazzbat (AT) spamlessness (DOT) fsnet.co.uk) gurgled happily, sounding
much like they were saying :

Indeed, but they wouldn't be noted on the sheet as advisories if they were
fail-able, but being nodded through.

Strikes me that the garagiste did exactly what he should have - notified
the customer of the advisories (the mirror had already been OK'd, so it was
only the drop link), and when the customer gave a go-ahead, did the work.

Perhaps he was slightly remiss in not explicitly stating "The car's passed,
but these have been advised", but it sounds like there's a good enough
relationship between him and the customer that he didn't think that was
needed.

Agreed. I'd have given him the go ahead to do it if he had said the
link was just an advisory .He's an ok bloke I've found .
