Default New Car Road Tax - UK - 01-14-2007 , 05:43 PM

I bought a car from a dealer yesterday and he is going to have it MOT'd
for me. I bought insurance online but the cover note will take 4-5 days
to arrive in the post. What shall I do about road tax? I can't apply
for it without an insurance cover note.

I don't have anywhere to park the car except for the street in front of
my house. I don't want to risk getting clamped.

Am I allowed to put up a sign saying that I have just bought the car
and have applied for tax? Or is that not allowed?

Thanks

Some insurance companies will email you a PDF file that you can print. In
fact I think one company *only* works that way.

Leave it at the dealers. Alternatively can't the dealer tax it on his trader
insurance if you give him the money?

Of course you are allowed. Won't do a blind bit of good however... :-)

That may be a bit pessimistic.

It is possible that the database the PO use will get updated in less
than 4 days, so that you don't need the cover note.

Leave it parked at the dealer then.

Fine as long as the bailiffs don't turn up while its still there and paid
for. Not an uncommon occurrence.

Can you sue their bollocks off for nicking your property if they do that?

No. You will get it back if you have the correct documentation and receipts.
Eventually.
Do you really want the risk and stress? In my experience dealers, even 'well
established' ones, tend to be 'here today, gone tomorrow'.

Leave it parked there, and don't pay the full amount until it has been
MoT'd and is ready for collection then.

You can apply for it as soon as the database has the insurance and MOT on
it. However that just transforms it from waiting for the cover note in the
post to waiting for the tax disc in the post.

Sadly although you are then insured and taxed it is still an offence not to
*display* a valid tax disc.

You lose.

Buy it. Drive it. Tax it when you can.
