I was keeping up with an EVO VIII today on the dual carriagway and he
had big puffs of black smoke coming out when I assume he was towards
the red line also something that looked like black balls of cotton
wool firing out and landing on the floor. I didn't know whether to
say something when we got to the lights. Was that a bad sign?

Puffs of black smoke would have been when he was changing gear. It's unburnt
fuel. It's probably quite tuned, too. The black balls of cotton are bits of
his silencers breaking up in the exhaust. He'll soon have none left. I'd
only have mentioned it if I beat him. Then again, I wouldn't have seen it
;-)

The cotton wool - wadding fromm the silencer coming out..

Black puffs- depending on model- Mitsi's stock fuelling map is on the rich
side especially on the FQ320 and more so on the 400 in the interests of
keeping the engine in one piece in the short term.

If its been furtherly re-mapped by a cheap and nasty and not rolling roaded,
they are often very rich again.

Ultimately it'll end up with oval bores and massive oil consumption if not
corrected.

Astra VXR. I was starting to catch up once I got to fourth gear. I
am convinced that any standard evo upto an FQ340 will not get away
from a VXR in a straight line from 40mph
