I wonder if someone could give me some pointers...

I ordered a car in April 2003 and paid deposit by credit card. The car
delivery lead time was 14-18 weeks which took it to September where I was
informed that there was a delay. On the 20th September I received a letter
saying the car should be with the suppliers overseas on 06/10 and to speed
things up I should pay the balance.....which I did. Now the 6th of October
has passed and I am told there is a 'despatch problem'.

What should I do next?

Panic?

Who did you order this from? Presumably it was some kind of an importer not
a UK main dealer? Paying the balance prior to delivery was a major error of
judgement.

Seek legal advice immediately.

I *think* he is in luck though - even if you pay only part of the
purchase price with the credit card you are covered for the *entire*
amount however it was paid.

Agreed about legal advice - although the least he could do is send a
recorded delivery letter demanding the car or a refund within seven
days and then sue for the rest. It would be out of the small claims
track, so a solicitor would probably be required to make sure all the
paperwork is in order, and getting the c/c company to cough up the
balance is probably tricky!
