Can anyone recommend an insurance company?

I'm 50years old, have 2 driving convictions.

I drive a 2litre, 2 year old Saab.

All the insurance brokers and companies I've looked at are charging
extortionate amounts and I'm trully fed up with the endless searching.

Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated

If there is one thing that I have learned in over 40 years of motoring is
that it is impossible for anyone to recommend an insurance company in terms
of premium costs. This is because every premium is calculated very precisely
on the individual circumstances of the customer in question. Every year,
without fail, I search around for the best quote I can get and always do
quite well. If, however, I suggest to someone else that my company is great
and has low premiums then they invariably come back to me and say; "Tried
that company you recommended - bloody useless - more costly than the company
I'm already with."
There are 101 things that affect premiums: convictions, accidents, location,
parked on road/off road/garaged, age, type of car, etc. My only real advice
is to check around every year because the company that was cheapest last
year will rarely be the cheapest this year!

Too true, and not only that, different occupations/postcodes are in
different risks categories depending on the actual claims statistics of that
particular company. I think.

A while back, when I was living in a shared student house in Guildford, I
got a quote for insurance with Norwich Union, giving them me current address
(as that's where I wanted the paperwork to come) even though I was doing it
a fair few weeks in advance and I'd have moved back home to Bracknell by the
time the policy started. I did this, thinking the difference in premium
would only be slight for a change of address, so for the sake of convenience
I'll just tell them of the address change when I actually move. They gave
me a price, but said that they could discount it to £xxx, but only if I
signed up there and then. It sounded like a figure I was unlikely to beat,
so I went with it (around £600-650 or so). Then on moving home I told them
of the change of address, and it was £125 extra just for moving!! That'll
teach me. Another company may well have been more competetive for Bracknell
than NUD were for Guildford, which I'd have found out had I given them the
correct info to begin with. That'll teach me!

No. You have to ring around and get quotes, because you have to beat their
prices down by competitive quotes, almost always. Don't be frightened to return
to an early broker with a later quote for their "of course, I could probably do
this price, now I look closely."
