Default Insurance after ban - 05-17-2005 , 10:38 AM

I'm just on the tail end of a 15-month ban for no insurance (naughty, I
know).
I have quite a few convictions on my licence too

What is the VERY cheapest car to insure after such a situation? I know
it'll be something like a panda750, but I'm thinking something like 1ltr
106/205/corsa/etc.... I'm looking to spend about 500-600 on it, but thats
flexible. Anyone have any ideas?

Fiat 600 is cheap to insure and crumples like paper when you crash it.

Fiat Cinquecento 899cc, insurance group 1. For that price you could
get the SX with electric windows etc, and it's still group 1.

Naughty! More like dangerously selfish and irresponsible.

Just let me know where you live and what the reg of your vehicle is, so
that I can avoid you. I just hope that you didn't injure or bankrupt
anyone and I trust you will find it nigh on impossible to insure a car,
for the health and safety of the populace at large.

Leopards and spots comes to mind.

Look, just because I made a mistake. Leopards and spots, what has that
gotta do with me? If I wasn't going to insure the car this time, would I be
asking what was cheapest? If I wasn't going to insure a car, I wouldn't be
driving no shitty 1ltr trust me.........

Let me know where you live and the reg of your car so I can crash into you

Couldn't agree more, however is significantly raising the insurance premium
really the best way of making sure that someone who has already been done
for driving with no insurance insures their car? It's like banning joyriders
from driving - what use is that?

I'm not saying this is necessarily true of the original poster but surely
raising the premium only helps to encourage repeat offending.

Chris

This is true. To be honest, the cost of the insurance was the only reason
why I didn't end up insuring my car (I am young, therefore insurance is
high).
Surely it is better to dish out punishments like community service, this
would have served as a better punishment + it wouldn't make the insurance
higher, and therefore harder to get.

Yeah, they should just give the person an appropriate penalty. Usually
they do something like a £200 fine, which is nothing when insurance
would be about ten times that. They should fine them something like
double what the insurance would've been, and use it to pay for
uninsured drivers when they have accidents.

this is a hard one..

having always been insured, even when the insurance was 10 times what I've
paid for a car, at first thought id agree (with the north korean bloke), but
I think the real thing here is the insurance company are punishing you for
not spending with them in the first place.. you have done your time for the
crime (the ban (and probably fine)) so being punished more is an offence
against the ROA, rehabilitation of offenders act. it doesn't matter what
OTHERS think, that's the law!

so it seems the insurance company is just fleecing you to get back the
premium you didn't pay (plus interest etc)

the problem is the legal requirement to be insured has provided the
insurance companies with a method of extortion.. you have to pay so they
don't need to be competitive.. however I think the legal responsibility is
right, id hate to be hit by an uninsured driver.. although I do have
comprehensive insurance just I case.

on the community service thing, I agree that and a ban and fine is good,
but why are insurance companies allowed to punish you more???

recently I filled in a form asking me for any motoring convictions in last
10 years, but the ROA states a speeding conviction is spent after 5 years
(I know some are not) but its an offence under same act for them to ask
this question without pointing out that under the ROA some do not have to be
put down, as they are 'spent'.

anyhow, glad to hear your going to insure this time, please do not be the
leopard mentioned earlier, and learn from your mistakes..

I believe there are some insurance companies who will happily insure you
(admiral, Liverpool Victoria, etc) and may well make the 'penance's less
severe..

as to cars, get a few quotes, as all the kev's drive corsa's and Pug's
they are not so cheap to insure, so maybe get a quite on a rover 400 (all
driven by old farts and damned slowly so cheaper to insure..) do a lot of
online quoting and different cars, you may be surprised..

I got a quote (for a laugh) on a Lamborghini Diablo, and it was only £300
more than I was paying for a 130 BHP 1.8 car at the time.. (of course you
have the money to buy a lambo, you take damned good care of it..

good luck, and well done for learning your lesson..

Loopy
