Whenever you like, I drive Limousines for a living, so when I work is a bit
erratic, but should be easy enough to sort.

It's a runner though, right? I could drive it back to Watford?

It's a runner, yeah... you'll be cold though, the heater matrix is kaput.

I've been all over the country in it, so Watford should be possible.. it's
not been out of the garage since November though...

A German friend of mine, currently resident in the UK, wants to sell her
German registered, German spec Mk3 VW Golf. I have suggested that she
would
be better off taking it back to Germany to sell there, but obviously this
is
a trip that will cost, ultimately diminishing the profit she will make
from
the sale.

So, anyone got any advice on selling this car in the UK? Is it viable? How
much less will it make over a UK registered, UK spec vehicle of similar
age
and condition? If you were going to sell in the UK, where would you
advertise
a private sale? Any particular dealer you would go to? Given that she's
looking to upgrade to something better and UK registered, is it worth
trying
to part-exchange it as part of a UK based deal?
I recently priced up a 1992 Alfa 33 offered to me complete with it's belgian
numberplates from a house near Heathrow.

To get it registered here in the UK would have cost £260 in bits and
paperwork (excluding insurance and tax, obviously) plus the time, for a pre
1993 car. If the car is newer than this then the process requires
additional certification and the price goes up about £200, because DVLA/VOSA
loves our money.

Then you have the fun and games of doing necessary work and the sales value
of a LHD vehicle. Don't forget, as soon as your friend sells the car it is
no longer registered, as the German registration system registers the car to
the owner with the plate, and when the car is sold the vehicle is
de-registered. The new owner re-registers the vehicle with a different
plate.

If your friend is still considering selling, please email me using my return
email address and we'll talk more.

Many thanks

Adam H

Assuming it is LHD, Its value would be very low in this country. If
she doesn't want to take it back to BRD, her best bet might be a
squaddie who's about to get posted over there.

What an excellent idea.

Speaking as the owner of a lovely LHD Mk2 Golf, I'd say sell it in Europe.
I
was offered ?900 for my '85 GTi in Greece, but it'd cost me about ?600 to
get it there. It's now off to the great scrapyard in the sky.
What do they give you for it at a scrappy? I'll have it and bung it in my
shed until I can insure it.

Indeed. That's what I've told her. It is LHD - all German spec...

That *is* a neat idea...

... now, where do you find a Germany-bound soldier in need of a third-hand
VW?

Salisbury plain, mostly.
At least when I went, that's where I went from:-))

I don't know the year or exact spec of the vehicle. It's red - lighter in
some places than others because it's suffering from paint fade.

It is worth absolutely nothing to start off with and there's dozens on
E-bay and hundreds in Autotrader in better nick. The fact that it's a
left hooker makes it worth even less.

She'll be lucky to actually find a buyer who wants a left hand drive
version when there's a plethora of right hand drive ones out there.
