This is the one thing that gets me about some speeders. They say they
"weren't exceeding the limit" when they get pulled for 37 in a 30, but as
you can see, their speedo will be pointing _well_ past 40, hardly a
"slight oversight".

FWIW, I know my speedo over-reads by 7-8%, so I know that if I keep it to
under 35 in a 30, I should be OK.

Pete.

a maximum of 85mph indicated without trouble. In the interest of fuel
economy, I normally adhere to an indicated 70mph though.
It definitely _isn't_ good to know this stuff. It's much better not to
take it into account.

This is probably one of the contributory factors in my recent speeding
ticket.

I bought a GPS reciever ready for when I got lost during my trip to africa.
I was playing about with it today to figure out how to operate it, and found
it could measure speed. With my old dear driving the escort, I found that 35
mph on the speedo equates to 31 on the GPS, 45 equates to 40 on GPS and 70
equates to 64 on the GPS. The front tyres are barely worn, so I guess it'll
even further out of calibration by the time they are due for replacement.
Another 3% perhaps?

That's about the same as my Mondeo speedo which
indicates about 10% faster than an eMap gps.

My lorry was 0.5 kph out at 90 kph but only because the tyres are part
worn.

That means that when we say lorries do 56, they do do 56 and not the 65
peolpes speedos show.

I'm going to try it in the cav next, because that feels a lot slower than
what the speedo claims. I reckon that when the speedo claims 70, it's only
doing 60ish.

It's even got a backlight so I can see it whilst driving in the dark ;-)

No doubt someone will aim the flame thrower at me for suggesting that I
might exceed the speed limit....

Just out of interest do they ALL do this or would I need a specific type??
(speed Measuring)

TIA

Mark (new to the thoughts of GPS... so would love recommendations and
prices of what peeps have and what "special" features they have and whether
they think them good or not. tia again)

check their websites, I think they nearly all do, my old Garmin GPSII did
(but only to 110mph)

A quick check on a few lorries with the GPS confirms that they do indeed do
only 56mph, not 60-65 as indicated by the various cars I drive. One was only
doing 54, must have had very worn tyres :-)

Police officer: So why did you crash into the back of this lorry?
Me: I was just checking his speed on the GPS, and didn't see him brake, guv!
