Default Roof bars? - 05-22-2005 , 07:30 AM

I bought a set of roof bars from Halfords, and they are fixed
using thumbscrews.

The intructions say 'tighten thumbscrews to 2 newtons', can
anyone tell me how my thumb knows when it has reached '2 newtons'?

They probably meant 2 Nm (Newton Metres), which is basically just about
finger-tight, adding a microscopic amount.

Use a torque wrench.
That would be very difficult on most of the fixings I have ever seen
on roof bars. Why they can't use anything as straight-forward as nuts
on them I don't know.

I recently spent £250+ on roof bars and cycle carriers. The supplied
fittings were awful and it was impossible to get them fitted so that
the felt secure. I ended up replacing all the fittings with more
standard nuts.

Alan Holmes (alan.holmes (AT) virgin (DOT) net) gurgled happily, sounding much like
they were saying :

One small grunt.

If you get to a grunt and a fart, it's too tight.

Tight enough so it won't fall off. But not enough to strip the threads.
Like my mate said when I went to tow his car home after the oil filter fell
off. "The instructions said hand tight."
I use a filter wrench. Stop pulling just before the casing wants to distort.

Tighten until it shears off, then back off half a turn...

I generally do them up until the victim starts screaming.

2 newtons is something like a yard stick with a half pound of butter attached
to the other end. Let that turn the screw or use the same force as you would
use to lift the butter. 2nm is not much as these things go.
