Mike G (metier (AT) lycos (DOT) co.uk) gurgled happily, sounding much like they
were saying :

Unless the police or someone in authority has the name and address of
those that took the bikes, the sensible ones will break them and sell
the parts, with little fear of being caught.

Unless plod happen to search for new BMW bike parts on fleaBay, with
sellers in Devon, over the next few months...

I can't see plod making a concerted effort to trace and recover all those
items 'salvaged' from the beached containers. Except for those who might
make it easy by trying to register a new BMW m/c of course.
My guess is that the insurance Co will just write everything off that
can't be easily recovered.
I've been wondering about this. Someone salvaging those bikes off the beach
apparently isn't committing an offence as long as they declare it to the
receiver of wreck.

Now, if I filled in that form, and especially if I described it as damaged
and the insurance Co didn't want to collect it from somewhere on Dartmoor
for instance, would I then become the legal owner?

So, how would I then be able to register it? And would I still be liable for
any costs other than VAT?

Steve

The vermin were even stealing 2nd hand clothes and passports (some peoples
stuff who were moving from 1 country to another) - I really hope they open
the dirty chemical boxes too

if they were moving from 1 country to another how did they travel themselves
if their passports were in a container to be delivered a few weeks on

I'm not too sure that is right.

Again, I'm not sure that is correct in this specific instance. According to
some, taking the bikes away. Filling in the forms etc, allows the person
doing so to charge a salvage fee for it's return, but in this case the
Insurance Co knew where the bikes were. Either on the ship or somewhere
between it and the beach. And, as I understand it, some of the containers
were broken open to get at the contents. Leaving everything where it was,
would have allowed the Insurance Co to decide what to do about the possibly
damaged goods without paying any fees to those who helped themselves.

All speculative of course, but I don't think it's as clearcut as the media
would have us believe. I don't think all the stuff on the beach could be
regarded as flotsam. Which as I understand it, can be removed, and where the
law being referred to does apply.

I'd guess that if the Insurance Co were not interested in picking them up,
they'd either ask for a nominal sum, and/or simply charge them for giving
written proof of ownership. It could then be registered in the normal way.
Probably after an engineers test certificate to show that the 'write-off' is
roadworthy.
I suppose VAT could only be charged on it's theoretical value, or what the
Insurance Co charge.

So am I. Should be interesting to see how it all pans out.
Mike.

If you had an ID card you wouldn't need a passport to travel between EU
countries.

About 5 years ago when I knew someone who worked at Heathrow their work ID
was enough, not sure if this is the case these days

Did you complain about being called scavenging vermin then? :-)

Meridian the local TV station have had complaints from them and are now
calling them volunteers )as they have volunteered to help clean up the
beach)
