Default Slightly OT: The beached container ship off Devon - 01-22-2007 , 11:01 AM

Aside from the odd pictures of some mangled cars in the debris that I've
seen (nothing salvagable), apparently the Police - who are powerless to do
anything other than hand out leaflets explaining peoples responsibilities
when taking cargo from a wreck - now say that people have helped themselves
to over *50* brand new BMW motorbikes from containers split open on the
beaches since yesterday evening.

Just how many of the people who've collected one will actually declare it to
the "receiver of the wreck" within 28 days and surrender it on request?
Those that haven't already eBay'd it of course..

How can you actually register the BMW bikes , cannot get a V5

(none of them have wheels - If you buy a cheap BMW bike in the next year
check the V5/ hold it up to the light / look for the water margin)

No Jade Goody jokes about them being bloody black or left hand drive

noggin (noggin (AT) thenog (DOT) com) gurgled happily, sounding much like they were
saying :

That crossed my mind, too...

Being brand new, there's a whole different procedure to register 'em - and
you can bet that BMW have got the VINs listed ready with warning bells
attached.

There will soon be a market for V5Cs from written off bikes.....

Keep an eye on ebay.

From a comment made by a couple of guys wheeling off a BMW bike on BBC South
Today, the wheels are with the bikes. They're just not fitted. Presumably to
reduce the shipping volume.
The guys interviewed fitted the wheels themselves, before wheeling it away.
Another one being carried away behind a tractor, also had wheels.

Unless the police or someone in authority has the name and address of those
that took the bikes, the sensible ones will break them and sell the parts,
with little fear of being caught. Would probably still fetch a few hundred
pounds

Unless plod happen to search for new BMW bike parts on fleaBay, with
sellers in Devon, over the next few months...

From what I understand about bike parts prices, they'd fetch more in bits
than complete. Probably more than the list price.

And the rest.

The plastics alone will be worth 'a few hundred'.

I can't see plod making a concerted effort to trace and recover all those
items 'salvaged' from the beached containers. Except for those who might
make it easy by trying to register a new BMW m/c of course.
My guess is that the insurance Co will just write everything off that can't
be easily recovered.
Mike.
