Default Swap My Civic For An Alpina B3 Cabriolet? - 07-20-2006 , 03:31 PM

What if someone you knew needed a practical cheaper vehicle because the
insurance on their B3 was silly and it wasn't a good vehicle for work

The B3 is a V-reg with less than 25K miles and as previously stated my Civic
Type-S is 53-reg with 22K on the clock. Both in excellent condition.

I have absolutely no idea how much a B3 is worth so the gulf in price may
make a deal a no go

But would I stand a better chance of selling the B3?

Tricky

Research the market for the B3 - start with Parkers, but only as a *very
rough guide* - look on Autotrader for the cheapest end of the scale
(probably a realistic rough guide to actual selling prices), maybe look
on owners' club websites and their 'for sale' sections, etc etc.

But at the end of the day, I'd not be at all keen to do any sort of swap
when I was only going to sell the other vehicle straight away anyway.
It's an unknown quantity and you could end up with something going wrong
(ok, unlikely given the mileage) and landed with a repair bill, but that
aside, it's going to be *much* easier to sell something you've owned for
a fair amount of time than something you've recently acquired - put
yourself in the potential buyer's shoes.

I wouldn't have thought you'd have too much trouble getting £8k for the
Civic - have a look at the Type-S that went on there recently (the one I
mentioned in another post, but if you can't find that - do an advanced
search, and click 'completed listings') and look at their auction as an
example of how to do it. Just flog it, get shot, pocket the cash, and
bank it.

I guess the answer is "Paging Alistair". He's the local Alpina expert.
But my guess would be that you'd be handing him a reasonably thick wad of
cash. Probably more than several grand. Parkers reckons £10,000 for a
normal '99/V E36 328i convertible. A genuine B3 has to be worth a decent
premium on that.

If the BMW is so easy to sell for more than £8k, then your mate should have
no problem in doing so himself and buying your Civic for cash.

If he's unwilling to do that, then you've got to ask yourself why YOU want
to...

If, otoh, you fancy playing with a 280bhp 3.3 litre RWD convertible for
summer weekends (and can afford it as a fun car), then store it over winter
and sell it in spring next year...

It was considered - but I do too much bloody driving during the week now on
business to want to do even more at the weekend - even if it was in such a
nice vehicle - and I would imagine even if I was doing tiny milages
servicing costs would be horrendous

Cheers to all

Tricky
