Default Turbo timers and Petrol Stations - 12-19-2003 , 01:32 PM

What do you do if you have a turbo timer fitted to your highly-strung motor
(e.g. Twin Turbo Jap supercar thing) but you go into a Petrol station where
you're meant to turn off your engine before filling up?

Don't let the lump come on boost for a 1/2mile or so before you pull into
the station. Then turn off and press abort on the timer. Simple

It's a whole new world - I'd never heard of them before now!

So, now I've Googled and I know what they are, how long will a turbo timer
keep the engine going for if you've been hooning around at ramming speed? I
guess it must be a few minutes because of the OP's question...?

Si

Most run for pre-set times, a few minutes seems about right. Some (one?)
will take into consideration the way you have been driving and adjust the
time accordingly. Or so I believe since I've never owned a turbocharged
motor :-)

AIUI the whole point is to keep the oil system going while the turbos cool
down.

Aye. Simple and perfect. Thanks.

The one on my Celica tubo has 3 timed settings. Plus an 'off'
switch.
If I intend to fill up, as others have said though, I switch it
off, and take it easy for a mile or so before stopping.

Yup. Quickest way to knacker a turbo on most turbo cars, is to
turn the engine off while the turbo is still very hot.
Mike.
