Looking for smallish £1500 -£2000 35+mpg car with ABS, power steering and if
poss air conditioning. I do not mind if is an auto or diesel, infact I would
prefer both!

I want something with good residual. What would you suggest? I was thinking
about the (97 onwards) Toyota Corolla 3dr ?

I was also thinking about the Toyota Starlet or the Starlet based Seria with
Gul wing doors. I found out the Honda Civic does not come with ABS and that
the Daewoo Nexia is unreliable. Some Micra's have ABS but I would prefer
something a bit bigger and safer.

I'm *really* not sure the OP realises that "something with good residual"
combined with "£1500-2500" equals "ancient and shagged"...

For a fixed small budget you want to be looking for something with worse
depreciation than ice cream in hot sun.

You're kinda all over the place here. You want a '97 Corolla Diesel
auto, or an import of which only 300 are in the UK and hasn't been
produced for a decade? Bigger than a Micra? You're kidding. The Sera is
like a Honda CRX for internal space.

I doubt you'll find a good '97 Corolla for £1,500, especially an auto.
