Vega engines had an unsleaved AL block. The idea was to have particles of
a hard material spaced equally throughout the block. This would keep the
bores from wwearing away. It worked well as a way to make race engines.
Keep in mind that race engines are made carefully, slowly, and didn't
have long lives. Production of a cheap car is fast and not so careful.
Thusly the distribution was off and cylinder bores wore. The oil was
burned as a result.

The vega my parents' had leaked and burned it. The slick in the driveway
was there for years after the car was gone.
