Default Worst Cars Ever - 11-07-2006 , 08:59 AM

New books lists them

Id be interested why some of the cars mentioned were so bad - isnt the
robin reliant a distinctive classic now for example....

Any list is bound to be controversial, and very few cars were so
consistently awful that everyone will agree that they suck. If nothing
else, I can easily imagine someone taking offense to their Biturbo
being included in the list; I've never driven one but IIRC contemporary
road tests seemed to consider it an alternative to a small BMW. Of
course maintenance and repair costs are probably astronomical once they
start to age, but being Italian, you'd think buyers would have gone in
aware of this fact...

I was at least pleasantly surprised *not* to see chestnuts like the AMC
Pacer or Gremlin being included (a car whose only fault was really
being ugly as s**t and sold in relatively small numbers, but seems to
be included on a lot of "worst car" lists)

I hope they included the deathtrap Isetta. A buddy had one in HS.
Very scary to ride in. IIRC it topped out at 45mph on a slight down
grade with a tailwind. http://tinyurl.com/e2y7a

Another buddy had a Subaru 360. It was amazing how many times the
passenger's suicide door could be opened in motion, slam into the RR
quarter and still be closed afterward. 'Course you could bend it with
your knee...

All one had to do is mention to the passenger, "Whatever you do, don't
open the door"... and they'd invariably do it as hilarity ensued.

The *Reliant Robin* - to give it its correct name, was never a good thing.
The engines were suprisingly tuneable though.

Maestros were awful, with the exception of the MG 2.0 EFi which wasn't that
bad to drive, just awful to look at.

I'm clueless as to why the Classic Capri is in there, ok, not the best car
in the world, but no worse than average for the time.

There are some cars that should be listed without hesitation as the worst
cars in the world ever; the Yugo 45, Hyundai Pony, Alfa 33, Allegro SS, Alfa
Arna, Vauxhall Astra Mk2, Austin Ambassador, Marinas, Pontiac Fiero, and the
Daf 33.

Maestro's were a styling disaster, but they were roomy and had quite a good
ride....

what amazed me was how shity they made a 5 speed VW box feel.....

I remember a friend having the choice of MG or standard 1.6 Maestro as
works cars and reckoned the 1.6 was the better of the two. Mostly
because it didn't break down all the time.

Strange that they've made the new Range Rovers look so much like them...

They were reasonably chuckable too. Like you say though, ugly, with a
nasty interior. I remember mine was mostly brown. You also have to put
them into the context of the rest of BL's output at the time (Montego
anyone? No? Sure?) and the contemporary competition. I'd have taken a
Maestro over a MKIII Escort. Faint praise, but all the same... Worst
problem was that they felt old-fashioned very quickly and stayed in
production until they were feeling very old indeed. I replaced an '83
Maestro with an '88 Pug 309, and the Pug felt as if there was a lot more
than five years between them in design (and the 309 was only released
three years later than the Maestro). The Maestro soldiered on until '94,
by which time it was practically a living fossil.

Maestro in there too, I had 3, they were fine.
It's a very stupid list.

Futhermore they picked the *MG* Maestro that even UK CAR magazine reckoned was
good ! They particulalry liked its torque IIRC. They called it 'grunt' !

The MG Metro was a hoot to drive too. A very undemanding drive and just great
fun. It used to feel like it was on rails most of the time. I had an indicated
115 mph on one once. Not bad for a naturally aspirated 1275cc.

Austin Princess ?

What was so bad about the Mk2 Astra btw ?

The worst car I've ever driven was a Volvo 240.

Its performance would be best described as arthritic.
