Why does it take the Japanese to successfully market a hybrid? Why are US
automakers selling Japanese cars just rebadged (Pontiac Vibe=Toyota Matrix,
one of many)?
1) I do not believe it is OT; because we are discussing the health of
one of the four manufacturers in Cup.
2) Ford recently wanted to close some plants that were causing them
to be unprofitable; and the union forced them to remain open and
continue losing money for the company. I can also point you to
articles about union employees that drive a fork-lift for $108,000 per
year. IMHO; the value of unions died with sweat shops; and I would
like to see Chrysler, Ford, and Chevy become profitable again.

Well, when you say "state of the art" about hybrids, that pretty
much does mean Toyota.

The point being, that Ford has nothing to be embarassed about with
the Escape Hybrid. It's not a half-baked, rushed out design; it's
every bit as well done as the Prius. But you don't see Ford trying
to make that point.

(trying to think of a way to get this somewhat on-topic, and
failing. Marty's patience is probably being somewhat tried).

It's Sunday. Of any day of the week, Marty should have more patience than
ever on Sunday right?
In my opinion, talking about stock cars is pretty much
on this side of the outer limits.

We may all get in trouble with the other mods on the
team, however. (

I've said it once today, but I'll say it again: I was
happy to see a Ford out front for a little while last
night. I wish the 17 team had stayed calm and taken
8 or 10 seconds to get set up for the last 20 laps.

We'll get 'em next week.

I sure hope they do something to stop these unions from destroying the
car industry.

AND, by the way, the Cerberus deal was endorsed by the UAW!!
Bill:

I am the OP and since it pertains to one of the OEM's involved in NASCAR, I
didn't think it was OT, sorry that you think so. It most assuredly is NOT a
flame post as I intended to start discussion amongst the group about the
impact of the buyout.

Far from it. Trying to keep this on topic-

DollarBill is a union member (International Association of Firefighters),
and he has the privilege of being on the safety team at Homestead.

His being able to perform his job, both at the track and at work, in a safe
manner, in order to protect you, is a direct result of the IAFF's push for
safer protective gear, among other things.

Advances in the protective clothing that race car drivers wear have also
come from the same push to protect firefighters.

In the US, a firefighter dies in the line of duty, on average, once every 3
1/2 days.

Still mourning the death of a F/f from my department. It was the first
tragedy that struck Virginia on the same day as the Va. Tech. shootings.

Well, it did indeed start a discussion :-)

As I originally said, I expect Chrysler will eventually end up in
the hands of the Chinese. One of their manufacturers will buy it
as a shortcut into the US market.

I don't think Cerberus will make big changes (other than likely
selling off Jeep) during their ownership. I don't think they'll
cut back on NASCAR.

Who knows what the Chinese might do, if they do eventually buy it.
Evidence is that Chinese companies like to "look western" and
they might stick with racing for no better reason than that. After
all, China does have an F1 round now, so at least some folks over
there are aware of the publicity value of racing.
