Default Dave D on Windtunnel regarding DEj and the 3 - 05-14-2007 , 01:13 PM

I agree 100% with Dave, or, more accuraqtely, Dave agrees with me! The fans
that want Jr in the 3 really want *Sr* back in the 3. I don't see any upside
for Jr to do that, he's not his dad and anything he does will not measure up,
and to go to RCR would make the pressure to drive the 3 incredible. It's
something to be saved for a retirement year tour for Jr, to drive Earnhardt cars
of the past, including the 3.

I think he'll end up with HMS and CM will go to Ginn or KyB will go to DEI,
which I predicted before last night on WT. (5/10/2007)

And Jr fans' heads will explode.

Is it just my perception or do others also think that JG fans like or tolerate
Jr *much* more than Jr fans like or tolerate JG?

Can't see him directly with Hendrick. Too many Ego's and major revolt by Jr
fans. RCR is good fit but without the 3. Major hang-up now is the #8 belongs
to DEI and Bud is hung through the 2008 season with DEI. All that
merchandise could be down the tubes if he goes with another sponsor. Saw 2
buses painted with #8 scheme at Texas this year.

I can't quite see Jr at HMS. Gordon, Jr and JJ on the same team would
place a huge burden on the shop, if nothing else. I think HMS is
spending a lot of money and having a hard time providing "the best"
cars, etc. for JG, JJ and KyB. If you add Jr. to the mix, there are
not going to be enough "the bests" to go around. And who do you give
the "almost the best" to? Plus, think of the payroll. Good thing
NASCAR doesn't have salary caps. ((^:

I could see Jr. going to Gibbs. Smoke and Jr on the same team would
be awesome. And Ginn might not be a bad fit either.

What I would really like to see is Jr going to Petty. It would give
Kyle an excuse to retire and Jr. could take over the 45, maybe with a
different number. I think Bobbie and Jr would make a great team to.
But that won't happen as long as Jr. keeps the Bud sponsorship.

Hummm...Kyle might feel that passing Adam's number on to Junior would be ok, and
it would be interesting watching Tony, Jr. passing on set-up tips the rest of the
year to keep Kyle's Owner points in the Top 35 for the first 5 races for next
year.

Can you imagine the #45 VISA Car(d) for Junior?

They could do a Gold scheme...and a Platinum scheme...and imagine the Junior-pic
style Credit Cards issued to all the Junior Nation ala MBNA several years ago
(mine was a DJ card!).

All assuming Dodge goes away and Petty Enterprises goes Bowtie.

I don't see it, either. It was interesting on Wind Tunnel that Ed
Hinton (he looks like Jaba the Hut) said there was something in the
background that was "hinky" about Jr. going to Gibbs.

I think Ginn or Evernham would be the best fit, although the Petty
idea is intriguing.

What would be wrong with the Junior Johnson coming back as an owner and
taking Jr.

unless I missed something, Evernham and Petty run the wrong car. Not to say a
switch couldn't happen, but I'd see him switching *to* Chevy if he wanted to win
races and championships, not away from.

I think this is going to precipitate some big name switches and contract
shenanigans, ala the Kurt Busch to Penske deal. I don't think there would be an
ego problem with HMS and JG/JJ/DE under the same umbrella. A raising tide
floats everybody's boat.

You have the beer problem at Petty and Gibbs, if Bud follows him, and don't tell
me about contracts, that just means the negotiations are more extended and it
cost someone more.

I do think there could be an ego problem there. Especially if one of
them thought one or both of the others were getting better equipment.
And how do you insure against that?

I think the beer sponsorship thing would be easier for Gibbs to
swallow than for Petty to accept.

And even though Jr. has said he wants to stay with Chevy, he would
probably change if someone made him the right offer. (^:

I always struggle with the "best equipment" argument. These things are
precision machined to tight tolerance and with near-perfect repeatability part
after part after part. I know several of the guys that do the machining for all
the Ford engines, JGR and HMS and a few others. I just don't get where the
"better equipment" comes from.
