On April 1, 1994, the USENET newsgroup rec.autos.sport was divided into
several racing-related groups - one of which was rec.autos.sport.nascar, or
"rasn" as it became known to it's participants. On August 13, 1998 a second
nascar-related USENET newsgroup (this group) was voted into existence:
rec.autos.sport.nascar.moderated, or "rasnm".
The rationale for the creation of this new USENET newsgroup was stated in
the RFD and CFV as follows:
================================================== ==========================
"NASCAR and stockcar racing, as well as other motorsports, have been the
subjects of Usenet discussion for many years. The existing
rec.autos.sport.nascar newsgroup (rasn) gets a total of well over a hundred
messages a day during the off-season and that number can increase to two to
four times that figure during the season, peaking at over 1000 a day during
speedweeks. Much of this traffic is relevant and of high- quality, but
there are also significant problems with spam, advertisements,
Driver/Team/Sponsor/Car-Make/Media abuse, and attacks aimed at other
posters to the newsgroup. Many former posters to RASN have left because of
this situation.
Rec.autos.sport.nascar.moderated is intended to be a forum where all topics
related to NASCAR and stockcar racing can be discussed without these
distractions. The primary focus of the group will be NASCAR's top 3 series:
Winston Cup, Busch Grand National, and Craftsman Trucks.
Questions and answers about this sport will be welcomed and a FAQ will be
maintained."
