I believe it's going to be five people every year.

My next five:
David Pearson
Cale Yarborough
Bobby Allison
Lee Petty
Ned Jarrett

Another hard call there. I would take out one of Allison, Petty,
Jarrett and put in Smokey Yunick.

And I'd think hard about taking out another one of those three
in favor of Herb Thomas.

Which leads me to the thought that the selection comittee
should make it a rule, or at least an informal guideline, that
at least one honoree each year not be a driver.

I think that the box has to be opened to also include
other NASCAR stars, from other divisions.
Just because guys like Richie Evans, or Jack Ingram are not
cup names, they (or ones like them) were of the best in
their particular NASCAR division.

Personally, I think either should be in before Jarrett or Petty.
It isn't the NASCAR Sprint Cup Hall of Fame.
(at least I don't think it is??)

Good point. We (especially in the south) tend to think of NASCAR
as pretty much just the Cup series. But the mods have a long
history in the north, and a whole set of talented drivers and
car builders who never attempted the southern series. Same deal
goes for the Winston West, with guys like Hershel McGriff.

And as you say, in the early days the Nationwide/Busch series
ran as a more independant series, with it's own set of stars,
rather than the Cup dominated second tier it is now.

There's probably a couple of deserving guys from the Convertible
series, too...that's a branch of NASCAR that's pretty much
totally unknown now-a-days.

John

(thinking that at 5 per year NASCAR's going to have this debate
going for at least another 10 years...which may have been the
plan all along)

Makes sense to me.

Gets people telling stories and remembering "the good old days."

What else is a Hall of Fame for?
