Kinda slow around here this week. I don't have anything NASCAR
to add, but here's a website I stumbled on with some racing
photos from the early 80's at Pocono, Dover, and a couple of
short tracks.

I haven't seen any messages posted this entire week,

Well, as far as I know, everything is working right, so I guess
it just disappeared like posts do every once in a while.

I'm a little disappointed the old-time pictures didn't provoke
any comment, but that's the way it goes.

I've been waaaaaaaaaaay busy getting the TIGHAR site ready
for an influx of visitors intrigued by the new Amelia movie,
so I didn't have time to go look at the pix and make
comments.

I'm on my way out the door RIGHT NOW to see the movie myself
(I'm expecting, from the reviews, that it will be a dud).

I'll be available to add filler to rasnm maybe next week. :-O

Sorry, John, I've been down w/the Creeping Crud the past few days...

Couple of things I noticed--I never knew that that was how Shawna
Robinson got her start.

I noticed a couple of pix of Tyrone Malone's trucks. He was from
here in Visalia--used to have a house of the 12th fairway of a golf
course I played.

take care,
Scott

Yeah, in some ways it was more circus sideshow than "real racing",
wasn't it.

One thing I thought was interesting from the pics, tho, was
contrasting the early shots from 1982-ish with the latter shots
from 1987 or so, when GATR was about to shut down. The early
shots show a variety of different trucks, which are recognizably
GMCs and Kenworths, which look just like trucks on the highway
except for a roll cage and moving the fuel tank to behind the
cab. The late shots show funny squished down 2-axle trucks,
which don't look anything like what you see on the road, and
it you look "under the hood", you see purpose built frames and
custom non-production bodywork.

It seems to me that was an early (and pretty much totally
overlooked) lesson to "stock" series, that when your vehicles
depart too far from the street appearance, you risk loosing
fan interest and folding up.

John

(on a vaguely related note, I saw a Chevy Malibu with Nat'l
Guard colors and a Cup-style wing on it on the road yesterday.
It was kinda weird looking, and did not make me think "race
car" at all)

LOL!

How strange!

I never knew that was going on.

15-minute pit stops? "Give me 10 fresh Goodyears and then
I can run 'em all down." (!)

Track position must have been very precious!

My recollection (and I can only recall a couple of those events,
from way back in the mists of time) is that tires weren't changed
on pit stops, unless they were flat (which, if that occurred,
was invariably to the right front). I think in most races
they didn't pit at all, altho I do recall them making a fuel
stop at Daytona.

It was interesting racing - they ran slow enough that it didn't
make a big difference where on the track they ran, so three wide
passes weren't unusual. And K-whoppers three wide is a fairly
imposing sight.

Ha! I went to a big rig race at the Milwaukee Mile in the early eighties.
They stopped the race a few laps short when one truck blew a tire and
knocked a section of the turn 4 wall back about 3 feet, then left a 3 foot
wide stripe of oil all the way down to the start/finish line.
