Default RPG 2007 Proposed Rule Changes - 12-11-2006 , 09:46 PM

We've got lots of time to work out a new RPG for
next season.

I suggest we simplify things a bit:

+1 for correct answers

0 for incorrect

Keep a running tab for your season to date.
Include it in your predictions and in your
self-scores.

Anyone can do a cumulative score.

People can correct the cumulative score.

You can post your recent result and cumulative
score in the subject lines.

We don't need a website or a spreadsheet to
see who is in the lead.

Marty

I'm not sure there's any enthusiasm for doing an RPG next year.
It died away pretty quickly after mid-season this year, with just
Jeanne, WW, and I towards the end.

While all the suggestions you make are good, I'm kinda thinking
that it might just be better to let it be entirely informal -
just post predictions if you feel like it, with no scoring or
anything like that. Winner is whoever's prediction generates
the most followup discussion :-)

We've got about two months or so to think about it.

It sure has been good for the group.

Two things happened:

1. I dropped out. Naturally, without the blessings that
flow from those of us who live not far from the summit
of Moral Victory Mountain, the rest of the participants
grew faint and weary. Me and Mr. Random are rested,
ready, and no smarter than we've ever been before,
so lots of people stand a good chance of not being
in last place next year.

2. We lost the web page that allowed people to compare
standings. I think that matters a lot. If we can
come up with a newsgroup-based method of comparing
results--so that anyone can update the standings--the
game will be a lot more fun for everybody.

I don't want people to feel that they have to play
RPG in order to make dumb predictions. The field is
wide open! Let ten thousand games blossom! )

Now, if we get a LOT of people saying they will post
more if RPG is killed, that could put the stake in
the vampire's heart ...

Well, I think at some point in that two months we're going to
need more than just you & me talking about it, or we can probably
assume there's no interest.

You sure you want to keep that partnership going? I recall
borrowing Mr Random for one race (Talladega?), and it was a
lot more work than I expected. :-)

Give people time. They're all out enjoying the
winter season right now. Just wait until they
hear the sound of hot pits in the spring. I'm
sure we'll win some of them back to the game. )

Calling on Mr. Random to get me started is easier than
thinking for myself. Or so it seems to me. :-O

Well, I'm kind of sort of interested, but have never participated cause I
just don't quite get the technicalities.....I'm not usually this dense; I
guess I've just not invested the correct amount of time into figuring it
out.

That's why I'm leaning more to an informal deal - you post your
predictions, educated guesses, and wishful thoughts on the upcoming
race, and hopefully we discuss the more insightful ones.

To my mind one of the flaws of the RPG to date was we rarely had
any discussion of why someone thought a particular thing was
likely to occur (of course, most of our predictions were really
in the wishful thinking category, so a reasoned analysis wouldn't
have gotten very far).

Winter Season? It's gonna hit 70 in PA this weekend and I'm going to have to
take the plow off the tractor and put the mower back on if this keeps up!

To keep this to racing, I sure would like to get my Cub Cadet 3208 tricked out
like those racing tractors!

Sure.

And I have no objection to people keeping a running tally
on how good their projections are: +1 for something that
works out, 0 for stuff that doesn't.

Boasting is allowed, even encouraged, in the New and
Improved RPG that I'm advocating. )

Sure. But playing the game did get people thinking and
posting, and there was often some followup to posts that
turned good.

That's why I don't want to abandon it altogether. Just
arrange it so that the math is easier and so that people
can check standings just by reading subject lines.
