Default Sumpin's gonna happen - 10-25-2009 , 08:07 PM

I have had this nagging hunch the last several weeks that something is gonna
happen with Jr. and Hendrick during the off season. Hendrick cannot be
pleased with Jr's performance even if he is the most popular driver in
NASCAR. His other stable mates win races and get into the Chase while Jr.
lags in mid-pack or worse.

What'y'all think?

Mike

I think Jr. may stay as long as he wishes, while waiting
for DEI to fall into his hands.

My guess is that he earns his keep.

Winning isn't the only way to stay in the game. ;o)

Not sure if he will stay on top for years to come.
Tony is challenging him, now.
Maybe not for MPD, but souvenier sales.
MPD will stop, when people stop thinking that his performance
is all just 'bad luck'.. and the sympathy wears off.
But people are infinitely capable of self-delusion. Look around you: the
number of people who "were always passionate Dale Earnhardt fans when he was
alive" vastly outnumber the number of people who actually liked the
Intimidator when he was actively Intimidating. And many of them are the
same people who somehow feel that a combination of shared blood and shared
name makes Junior somehow "specialer" than the guys who beat the crap out of
him week in and week out.

(Obviously it's the name; nobody's even thought about being that supportive
of Kerry, or Jeffrey.....)

So "when the sympathy wears off" may be long after Dale's decided to hell
with driving and gone off to build his own empire. (He seems more
interested in some ways in starting his own internet empire than in becoming
another Rick Hendrick......and that might actually be more the direction his
natural talents lie. Who knows?)

I think if Hendrick has any more clue than the rest of us do as
to _why_ Earnhardt isn't getting the finishes, then yeah, he'll
make changes.

But my guess is that Hendrick has no more idea than the rest of
us. Take yesterday - Earnhardt's car melts the bead on the right
front and he hits the wall. That didn't happen to the other cars,
so what's different? Does Earnhardt's driving load the right
front more? Does he have a radically different setup that heats
the right front more? Did someone forget to connect a brake blower
or mis-route a duct, or put tape over the wrong opening?

And the week before - Earnhardt breaks a transmission, something
which didn't happen to the other cars. Does Earnhardt shift hard?
Does his seat placement require weird angles on the shift lever?
Did someone not prep that tranny properly before install?

Week before that, Earnhardt was what, 8th or so, when he got caught
in Sadler's wreck. Don't see how any changes at HMS could prevent
that one.

Hendrick, historically, hasn't been one to make changes for the
sake of making changes (unlike, say, Jack Roush). So unless he
can see more of a pattern than I, and can point to some specific
cause that a change will fix, I don't think he'll do anything.

I'd guess maybe he's harder on brakes.
You're right. The others aren't

I'd say he may have blown a shift, or broken it
when the car dropped off the jack, leaving the pit.
You're right again.
The others don't break transmissions.

It was said during the race that both times DEJ blew a tire & walled it,
he had too much brake bias set (in the front?) heating the bead.
DEJ also missed his pit stall one time. How many times this year?
Does he need glasses? a drug test? a change to Childress? who knows?
