Default Tires, again - 05-18-2007 , 11:39 PM

The first attempt apparently failed.

I watched the Special Windtunnel and heard Darrell Waltrip say, "This is a
stock car with bias ply tires, and that was Dale Earnhart's era. This is a
NASCAR race car with radial tires, and that is Jeff Gordon's era. When was
the radial tire introduced?

Well, since it didn't get posted, I had to look it up and found this:
<quote

Goodyear introduces its radial slick tires to Formula One. The first
radial victory is at the Belgium Grand Prix at Zolder with Michele Albereto
in a Ferrari.

Michelin withdraws from Formula One.

Hoosier, a Lakeville, Ind., racing tire company, competes with Goodyear
in the NASCAR Busch Grand National Series.

Hoosier enters NASCAR Winston Cup racing. Neil Bonnet's victory on
Hoosier tires at Richmond, Va., stalls Goodyear's Winston Cup winning streak
at 464.

Goodyear develops a new Eagle race tire, the radial, and introduces it
at the Winston Cup race in North Wilkesboro, N.C. -- and wins -- making the
Hoosier bias-ply tire uncompetitive and obsolete.

Hoosier withdraws from NASCAR Winston Cup racing.

No, it came through and we discussed it, with details.

Notice that your post has gifs attached. I guess I should
have rejected it on that basis, but they're so small, I
let it through.

No html, no pix, please.

Substituting text for the gifs:

You know, that got me thinking..
This is such a good group of people, what would
be the harm of occasionally sharing a picture?
As long as it was on topic, or of interest to this 'family'?

Just curious..
I'm sure everyone these days, has the option of downloading
pics or not.. even with old junkie stuff like mine.
I don't have to download unless I say "ok"...
I mean, I'm one of the last people on earth to finally
get rid of dial-up... so believe me, my stuff is s l o w .....

If it was an issue at some point in time,
then the mod could THEN reject stuff...

The big-8 newsgroups, of which this is a part, are text-only,
as a general rule.

Some news services strip binaries from text groups.

The right way to share a picture is to put it on a
web page and provide a link.

Lots and lots of free web pages available. I'll
make space for anyone who can't figure out how to do
that.

Letting them through is contrary to our charter.

I SHOULD have rejected the post, but the gifs were
small and the main body was in text, so I let it
slide.

Some news services strip binaries from text groups.
Worse, some (such as Newsguy) just discard the entire post if
it has a binary attached. GoogleGroups might do that also, I'm
not clear what their policy is.

Or post it in the appropriate alt.binaries.whatever, and post a

I wish you had rejected it. Not only do binaries like that annoy
the heck out of me, but they're an excellent way to spread viruses
around.

It's been a longstanding fight.

One of the things that the new big-8 management board
did was to ask news service providers to kill some
binary groups that had originally existed for circulation
of code but which had become a venue for off-topic
stuff.

Getting rid of those big-8 binary groups reduced the
overhead for the big-8 substantially.

The big bucks in Usenet nowadays (such as they are)
are for providing binaries outside the big-8:
pictures, movies, audio, etc. The text-only
part of Usenet is very small compared to the
binary traffic.

Our charter was written from the beginning in the
text-only tradition.

In the case of the post with the gifs, the binaries
weren't even interesting NASCAR pix. They were just
graphics for the different years in the timeline.

You can take me off your @#%& list.

I don't know much about racing (cf. almost any one of my
posts and you'll see what I mean). (

I get along OK with computers. I have had a LOT of hands-on
experience with them since 1982-83--right around the same
time I started watching NASCAR, come to think of it.
