Default 177 Point Loss - 10-08-2003 , 05:12 PM

is all The Media talks about, but the rest of the story is this:
WC Pts' Leader has indeed lost 177 points to 2nd place Harvick,
but MK has also lost 196 to JGordon, 201 to Stewart, & perhaps
most importantly 216 points to Newman.

Why most importantly? Newman is winning / getting max points
when Harvick & the rest are not. Historically, the biggest deficit
was AK in '92 from 278 points back with 6 races to go.
Interestingly AK was 4th in the standings just like Newman is now.

Many writers are saying maybe next year for Newman, i ask why not
this year?

Cru...i've had the same thoughts but i didn't post 'em 'cause i was getting
crap about "it's over" and there is no way that the #17 team was going to
lose the points race. believe me, if anyone is good enough to catch the #17
it's the #12, but i have to say RCR has won championships in the past and
they are doing what they need to do to keep pressure on the #17 team. they
may not be wiing races, but their finishes are up there each week. i did a
little research earlier this week and it showed that the #17 has been better
than the #29 on all the tracks coming up, that they have raced against each
other on except homestead. so if the #29 can pick up about 45 points per
race, this could be an interesting six weeks.

I just took a look at the stat page you pointed out. While browsing I
thought ' If newman could have put together an better first half this
season he could have been the second driver to win a championship
following ROTY. An accomplishment which is damn near impossible
according to the stats. I guess writing off Newman as the 2003
champion is a bit premature. It could be done.
