Hendrick does own the cars. Jeff Gordon is a co-owner now, but that's

No, the deal is that Gordon is a part owner of Hendrick Motorsports.
Each car has a designated "owner of record" who has to be one of the
owners of the team but who doesn't have to be the ONLY owner of the
team. He happens to be the designated owner of record for the #48 car.
Rick Hendrick Sr. is the designated owner of the #5 and #24 cars, and
Mary Hendrick serves the same function for the #25 car.

There are several other owner-driver hyphenates on the tour: most of
them drive the same car they own, unlike Gordon.
