Default Ambrose, Robby Gordon team up - 08-07-2007 , 02:42 PM

Ambrose to drive Cup car for Robby Gordon
Lee Spencer, FOXSports.com

Robby Gordon will exact his revenge at Watkins Glen this weekend.

Not only will Gordon be racing the No. 7 Ford, the team owner will
field a second car — the No. 77 — for Busch Series regular Marcos
Ambrose, who he fiercely battled in the closing laps of the NAPA
Auto Parts 200 at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve on Saturday.

"Marcos did a helluva job," Gordon said. "He led a lot of laps on
Saturday. It will be great to have him as my teammate."

Ambrose, who drives the No. 59 Kingsford Ford for Wood Brothers/JTG
Racing, qualified fifth and led the most laps before Gordon spun him
out with two laps remaining in the event. The Australian Ambrose
finished seventh and is currently eighth in the Busch Series point
standings.

If he qualifies for the race, Sunday will mark the Nextel Cup debut
for the 30-year-old Launceston, Tasmania native. Ambrose began his
career in NASCAR with the Wood Brothers last season.

I don't think so. What a wild twist to the story. I bet the car will
be total crap since RG can barely keep one car going, but maybe
Ambrose can make something of it.

Ambrose is getting the benefit of Gordon's expertise in road racing.
We'll see if he can take advantage of it or whether he was just a flash
in the pan.

if the car is at least half decent (which gordon's cars always seem to
be on road courses) then i'd have to count ambrose as being a top 10
guy this weekend along with JPM, carpentier, RG,fellows and all the
road course ringers that will surely be brought in this weekend

JPM maybe. Robby - for sure, as long as he doesn't get wrecked out. The
ringers? They've never impressed yet. No point holding out for anything
stellar from them. The Cup regulars consistently perform better than the
ringers.

Ambrose was a several time champion in the Australian Touring Car
Championships driving a Holden (GM), though it could have been a Ford.
These were V8 powerhouses, not 4 cylinder touring cars. Anyone who has
watched an ATCC race knows Ambrose is a top driver among many other
good Aussie drives and knows how to bang doors and trade paint. The
ATCC was shown for a couple of years on Speed but they appeared to
have dropped the series.

Like I said. Ambrose gets the benefit of Gordon's experience in road
racing.

Holden Commodore, which was sold as the Pontiac GTO in the US.

He has plenty of road racing experience. All of the Australian V8 series is
run on road courses.

As much as Gordon? As much racing experience as Gordon?

Right....
