Anybody watch these shows on Speed? Pretty cool stuff. Tonight they showed the race at Martinsville from 1971. Back then they only started 30 cars, what they should be doing today on the small tracks and get this....cars spun, and gasp, they didn't throw a caution. The world didn't come to an end either. I think todays folks in Nascar could take some cues from back then but wait, too many big money cars would either not make the race or would finish a few laps down. Can't have that now can we?? *** Free account sponsored by SecureIX.com *** *** Encrypt your Internet usage with a free VPN account from http://www.SecureIX.com *** |

Did you see the pit crews? What were they thinking back then? One crew had those funky Coca-Cola pants that I am old enough to remember. I think I saw one crewmember with shorts on. Go back far enough and the drivers only wore t-shirts and a leather helmet. |

Go back far enough and the drivers only wore t-shirts and a leather helmet. Some of the real old time drivers, especially in open wheel, wouldn't wear seat belts. The thinking being it is better to be thrown clear of the wreck. Back in the 50's, that happened to Johnny Key, who was originally from California, but back east racing midgets. He brought two of them. I can't immediately recall which track it was, but he had a wreck and was thrown clear. Only to be hit and killed by his other car while getting up off of the track. |

Scary thing was the cars were roaring into the pits as fast as the drivers would dare. Over 100 mph aiming for their pit crews. |
