Frankly the stink bait is usually much better than this. You put
Davey in the list, but leave out Bobby, who contributed far more to
the sport. Davey might have had he lived, but Bobby and Donny were
far more important. I can think of at least a dozen names without
thinking very hard that would hardly be "just pebbles" in the stream
of Nascar. Such a statement says far more about the poster than it
does about Nascar.

Bobby and Donny were also important because they were part of the Alabama
Gang.

I was thinking more or 1990 - to the present but you are more correct than I
was.

I would certainly put Bobby Allison in that list before Davey.

Believe it or not, there were Nascar races prior to Jeff Gordon. Most
of the real racers never saw the kind of income that Jeff saw his
first year. Frankly I think history will look back and it will be
about 1990 or so where the mistakes that were made are the ones that
caused the Nascar downfall. Fact is much of the money and fame the
drivers of today have is in large part due to the efforts of those
that came before.

There were two more members of the Alabama gang. One was in the
helicopter with Davy that fateful day, and the other pulled him out.
One of those members designated another member too.

The guys today if they had to race many of the old timers couldn't
hold a candle to many of the guys from back in the day. When Jr and I
don't mean Dale Jr, came into Nascar he knew cars like the back of his
hand. The driver handled the set up. Had that been the case in the
early 90s, Jeff wouldn't have done anything. At that time Jeff knew
very little about stock cars. Ray handled all the set ups. Jeff
learned, but back in the day they wouldn't have had the chance.

Many of the real greats from yesteryear wouldn't have gotten a wiff of
todays Nascar. Why? Lack of media skill and savy. They would still
be among the best on track, but a shy country boy from Ga didn't like
the attention. He would rather work on a race car than talk to the
press. He learned quite well. Most remember him as Awesome Bill from
Dawsonville. Yet in his early days he was more likely to be up under
the hood with his brother, than to talk with the media.

Many of the greats from back in the day, now wouldn't have a hint at a
ride. Why? They couldn't have gotten a ride because of lack of skill
with the press. One guy used to roof houses for relaxation when he
wasn't driving. You know who that was by any chance? Another saw
where Nascar was headed and took a Dale Carnegie speaking course to
teach himself to be better with the press to better respresent the
sport of which he was champion.

I could go on quite easily. Can you?
