Default The Bottom Line - 02-20-2006 , 11:03 PM

So what Johnson's Crew Chief did is bad enough to have him thrown out of
Daytona but not bad enough to have the car impounded. This just doesn't
make any sense. If Nascar really was interested in stopping the blatant
attempts at cheating, the whole team would have been escorted off of the
property. This would get the message across to the teams. It's quite
obvious that Nascar is more interested in the publicity that this whole
thing created than they are in stopping the cheating. You can't fine these
teams enough to make them stop and 25 points doesn't make that much
difference to them, but if you keep their sponsor off the track and off
camera just maybe that would make them stop and think twice before they ever
attempted to blatantly cheat like Knaus continues to do.

NA$CAR will not tell a big time sponsor (like Lowes) to go away

NASCAR never had any balls.

Back in the mid 60s, NASCAR disallowed Mopar's Hemi engine. Mopar responded
by pulling out. Richard Petty drove a rail dragster that year.

When NASCAR disallowed Ford's DOHC 427 Hemi engine, Ford just didn't show
up very often to race.

Try doing that now. Sponsors rule everything these days. Even NASCAR.

And isn't this the whole point? To be consistant Nascar needs to start
taking cars whether or not the cars can be corrected or not. You would
think that Nascar would be more irate because these guys think that they
won't be caught by something like this.......or was the illegal part just a
smoke screen for something really more illegal? This is the reason that the
cars really need to be confiscated regardless if the illegal parts can be
removed.

It's an inspection process. For one - if NASCAR is not competent enough to
find a "problem" then the car should be legal once it clears the inspection
station. Of course that would not work because NASCAR continues to change
the rules every week, upon discovering some new innovative approach by a
team. It becomes deemed "illegal" and a big huff follows. Spirit of the
rules and all that crap. That's just an excuse to continue to subjectively
control the events. No surprise - NASCAR has made it clear that they're
about the show.

You seem offended by what they *think* they can get away with. So what? If
they think they can and they're wrong, they pay the price. What does it
matter that they think they can beat the system? If they try and they do
get away with it so what? Do you really believe stuff isn't happening every
day on every team? Stuff that is "illegal".

I just don't buy this "confiscate the car" thing. So many people are all
about punishment. If the car's illegal, and it gets caught then it can't
race until it's legal or they bring up another car that is legal. Why the
hang-up on punishment? You're making this too complicated. Legal - run it.
Not legal - can't run it. Change it after inspection and it's discovered to
be illegal as a result - no points, no place, no cash.

Will NASCAR see it this way? Heck no. For a couple of reasons IMHO. For
one, they're all about the power of NASCAR and they do resent crews not
humbly bowing in deference to NASCAR. For another, they're trying hard to
market to a new demographic that they feel is inconsistent with the idea of
cheating. They're focused on where they want NASCAR to go and they make the
rules, so all the rest is just guys like me bitching.

And until Nascar changes their policy or policies, nothing else will change.
The preception of tainted wins, "spirt" of the rules will continue until
Nascar decides to do something about the whole mess. I say, throw the whole
team out when they are caught cheating (or trying to cheat) for that race if
it's before the race or for the next race if it's post race. The sponsors
will be up in arms and maybe, just maybe that will get point across to the
cheaters. Better yet, make them race the race for no points, no money and
take all their sponsors name and logos off of the car and run a plain white
car with "cheaters" in big bold letters on every panel of the car and then
after the race Nascar confiscates the car. If you get your jollies out of
the same cars and crew chiefs breaking the rules so be it. There has to be
a price to pay for breaking the rules and right now that price is not high
enough.
